Some additional recommendations:
Configure Internet Explorer NOT to run ActiveX from any site in the Internet Zone by default. Add only sites you really do trust, such as your bank, to your Trusted Sites zone.
Consider installing the MVPS hosts file to block access to parasite web sites. This alone can reduce alerts from your anti-malware software to near zero, and has the side benefit of eliminating most ads.
Practice safe computing practices, including avoiding the install of software you haven't fully researched and even tested for yourself in a virtual machine. Don't believe everything you read; hold a healthy skepticism.
