I'm sorry but this isn't enough information to get focused help. Please post back with the exact text of the error message. Also include information about what antivirus/security programs you have installed and what you are doing when you get this popup. You still didn't answer my questions about what antivirus/security programs you have installed and what you are doing. Start with the basics and go through the very thorough virus/malware scanning steps described here: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad).Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

It's not an error message, because I'm getting the same thing. Occasionally, I have a session where I'm never interrupted, but not every time. I have AVG 9.0 Free, but I'm not sure that matters. It's a security check, like we're seeing more & more often on Facebook when sending out friend requests. It requests that you type 2 words that are sometimes tough to read, gives you a box to type them in, gives you 3 minutes to do it before auto shutdown, and pops up intermittently. You could have 5 minutes pass between times, or 10, or 30, it doesn't seem to be on a set schedule. I rebooted the other day and got it to stop doing it, but have had no further luck that way. It really seems like an admin/security setting, but I can't find where in Windows to fix it. As for what I'm doing at each time, usually I am on Facebook, but it hasn't mattered what I'm doing. It's extremely obnoxious to have to do this every few minutes. It's interrupted me 3 times just while I've been typing this reply. The 2 words it asked for this time were "associations" and "steined". Please help.

AVG, upon scanning, immediately detected trojan horse Agent2.VOU. Listed directory was C:/Program Files/captcha.dll......................maybe this helps?????

That's very interesting. It certainly isn't part of Windows. Because of your excellent description, I did a Google for "Facebook captcha" and sure enough, it is a new "security" feature of Facebook. This site shows how to stop the popups. http://tech.nabtron.com/how-to-remove-facebook-security-check-words-captcha-code-text/874/ http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=facebook+captcha+popup&aq=2&aqi=g-s1g2&oq=facebook+captcha+p&fp=be5ffa94030d2d34 It is possible that other sites have something similar. If you are getting the popups constantly, I suspect that you either have an instant messenger running that is generating the popups or that your computer is infected. Using CAPTCHA popups is a pretty common phishing technique as you will see if you look at some of the links in the Google search above.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Thank you for the info on how to kill those on Facebook. As for the XP popup box, I'll wait & see what happens. Hopefully the AVG took care of it. My MSN messenger does load at startup, but I rarely use it, so I've just been closing it once everything has loaded up. Thanks again. If I discover any other anomalies, I'll post back.

No. It sounds like your computer is infected and you need to get it cleaned up. Here is the link I gave the original poster further up the thread: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I had the same problem. It only happened when internet was connected. A popup with Windows XP logo and instructions to type in two "encripted" words, just like one of those security features on web sites. With a timer giving you 2:30 to type them in or it would shutdown. Only it wouldnt shut down, only freeze the screen. Task manager still worked with Ctrl/Alt/Del. I fixed it (after much reading and failed efforts) by restarting in safe mode, then downloading MalwareBytes, installing, and running a scan. Ad-Aware from Lavasoft did not fix it. I couldnt get AVG to run when the pop-up was active, but I didnt try to run AVG in safe mode. MalwareBytes identified infections with Koobface worm, and three adware threats (Comet, My Web Search, and Starware). After the MalwareBytes scan and reboot, I ran AVG and that found a bunch more junk. Good luck and thanks to all the posters with advice. Tags: Trojan shutdown two word pop-up virus malware windowsXP
