Hi, Thank you for your post. By default, Windows Vista does not allow simple file sharing. Access to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. This means that Windows Vista does not allow network connectivity with blank password. Also, for security reason, please create a password for the account you used to access the share folder on Windows Vista. For more information about file sharing in Windows Vista, please refer to the following article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx Hope it helps. Hello mauritos, By default, Password Protected sharing is turned on in Vista. If you turn the option off through the Network and Sharing Center this behavior is equivalent to simple file sharing in Windows XP which uses the Guest or Everyone to authenticate for network access. Sharing the root of the C drive is a little harder to do than in XP as it is considered unsecure than sharing specific folders. You must set folder and sharepermissions but the UI only allow this through the advanced sharing option. There is no default password; however with password protected sharing you must assign a user account with a password to multiple computers on the networkin order for you to access the computers. Hope this helps. Eric Cross Microsoft MVP (Windows Networking) http://mvp.support.microsoft.com

Thanks for your contribution, Eric. Hi mauritos, As this thread has been quiet for a while, we assume that the issue has been resolved. At this time, we will mark it as Answered. Ive also summarized the issue for you, and I hope it would be helpful: As Eric said, if Password Protected Sharing is turned off, the behavior when accessing the share folders on the Windows Vista machine is most closely matches Windows XPs forced guest behavior. This allows users to access share folders that have been granted permission to Everyone. A slight difference is that Windows Vista still allows a user to authenticate with credentials before it authenticates the user as guest. This means that if a folder is shared to a specific user or to users with different permissions, each user can connect and be allowed different permissions on the folder. In this case, please confirm that the disc has been granted read permission to Everyone in both Security and Sharing tabs. You may check it using the following steps: 1. Check permission in the Security tab:============Right-click the disk you would like to share, click Properties, and then click the Security tab. 2. Check permission in the Sharing tab:============Right-click the disk you would like to share, click Properties, click Advanced Sharing, and then click Permissions. In addition, please try to enable the Guest account on the Windows Vista machine. Hope it helps. If there is anything unclear, please feel free to let me know. Have a nice day.
