You need to enable Internet Connection Sharing on Win7 laptop, after that set up ad-hoc connection with XP laptop to share Internet connection. If you want to know more, check out this Internet Connection Sharing tutorial. Hope this helps.

Look at using either Virtual Router or Connectify to turn your WiFi equiped Windows 7 laptop into a wireless router/hotspot so your other clients can access the internet. http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/ http://www.connectify.me/ Check the hardware compatibility lists. Also be aware the clients must support WPA2. That can not be changed. The best solution, IMHO, is to purchase a wireless router if its in your budget...MS-MVP Windows Expert - Consumer "When all else fails read the instructions..."

I made an ad hoc in computer(server) that is connected to internet , the client computer connect to server via wireless, How the clien computer can connect to internet via wireless? please help me! I think the post from Al is the way to go; as suggested, pick http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/ and install it on your windows 7 system (the one connected to the wired router); fire up the VirtualRouter application and configure it to offer wireless connectivity so, in effect, turning your Windows 7 into a WiFi Access Point, then, configure your other wireless clients to join the Windows 7 WLAN you just created and they'll be able to surf the internet using your "virtual access point"

just in case; the "virtualrouter" is just a GUI wrapping the Windows 7 native "softAP" APIs; if you want, instead of installing that small application, you may just use some "netsh" commands to achieve the same result; in such a case you'll basically need to enter the following commands (from an "elevated" command prompt) netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=<name> key=<password> netsh wlan start hostednetwork where "<name>" will be the SSID you want to use and "<password>" will be the password needed to access your new WiFi network; then, after the "start" command (2nd line) your WLAN will be active; at this point to fully enable it, you'll need to open the "Networks and Sharing Center" in your Windows 7, select the right option for your internet connection and then enable the sharing, there specify the "special hosted interface"; that's all, from this point on, you'll be able to connect other devices to your WLAN and allow them to surf the internet Notice that if you'll reboot your windows 7 box, the WLAN won't automatically be reactivated, so you'll need to re-enter the command netsh wlan start hostednetwork to reactivate it; to ease things, you may either create a scheduled task which will run "at boot" or just a small batch file (bat or cmd) containing the above command and which you'll then run "as admin" whenever you'll want to activate your virtual access point For further details, please see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd815243%28VS.85%29.aspx HTH

I receive this message: The hosted network couldn't be started. the group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation Given what you're writing I suppose you went straight for the most "complex" approach, that is, using netsh, now, while it should work and we may troubleshoot it, I really wonder why you didn't first try one of the solution proposed by Al, that is, installing virtualrouter or connectify; either one may help you doing what you need and will be quite easy to setup As for the netsh, if you want we may try finding out the cause for the message you're receiving, but BEFORE going that way and, sincerely, wasting time, I think you'd better pick "visualrouter" and give it a spin
June 7th, 2011 11:28am

I did the solution proposed by Al, before your solution But I got an this message Virtual Router will not start after installatio * Should I configure IP address of both laptops and modem?

I did the solution proposed by Al, before your solution But I got an this message Virtual Router will not start after installatio * Should I configure IP address of both laptops and modem? I see, but sincerely, I think that posting here and giving a bit of feedback would have been appropriate; all in all we're here trying to help you and if you don't help us helping you we'd all end wasting our time. Anyways; the message you get when trying that "netsh" commands may have several causes, I'd suggest you to have a look at the following http://www.technospot.net/blogs/how-to-enable-windows-7-virtual-wifi/ and in particular at the two comments at the bottom of the page which contains infos and tips to troubleshoot such issues; keep in mind that not all WiFi cards support that "accesspoint" mode, in such a case, the last suggestion from Al (that is, pick a regular AP) is still a good one

I enabled ICS. BTW, however I assign a security key for ad hoc connection in server, but client can connect to wireless in any key!!!! When I click start virtual router, An ERROR appear Virtual Router could not be started.. If I want to compare my network connection with the image in http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/: 1-The ICON of internet access in site is two computers But the ICON in my laptop is like icon's public network (yellow desk)!! 2- (in the site)the wireless network connection has sign of green wireless icon BUT under wireless network connection in my laptop, I have icon of 3computers that connect to each other(I think it is sign of ad hoc). When I press connect, there was written "waiting for users" instead of connected

Virtual Router could not be started.. Again, did you check the documentation ? See, not ALL WiFi cards are supported, and the documentation lists the cards which support the "virtual AP" feature; also, it's recommended to install the original WiFi card drivers Again, the virtualrouter documentation and the infos you can find at the other link I posted (technospot) should allow you to troubleshoot the issue and, at least, find its cause; please, open this page http://www.technospot.net/blogs/how-to-enable-windows-7-virtual-wifi/ read the document and then jump straight to the bottom of the page and carefully read (and follow) what you'll find in the last two comments (the ones from "Phil") Or either... give up and buy an Access Point; won't cost you an arm and a leg and will just work :) - by the way, learning how to setup/troubleshoot the virtualAP in seven may be interesting but ... that's up to you

You told: documentation lists the cards which support the "virtual AP" * But the documentation did not list the cards which support the "virtual AP"* No ? Start here http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/documentation now, read carefully the page; you'll find a line reading "You can view a list of devices here: Supported Devices" and containing a link which points to http://virtualrouter.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=Supported%20Devices&referringTitle=Documentation and the above lists the supported devices; now, given this I wonder if you did really read the documentation

I have Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG with win7 32bit, I Download the last update. How can I know NOW Whether my WiFi cards support "accesspoint" OR NOT? before installing "PRO/Wireless 3945ABG" I could not install virtual router but now after install "PRO/Wireless 3945ABG" I could install it(virtual router). Is this show that my WiFi cards support "accesspoint"? Note: virtual router could not be started YET

Is this show that my *WiFi cards *support "accesspoint" Sincerely I can't understand what you're asking above; if, after installing the Intel drivers (which I guess is what you did) the virtualrouter s/w tells you that your card is working, you should just configure and start the virtualrouter and then try connecting your XP client to your virtual access point
