Are either of those machines connected to the Internet? If so, in what manner? (cable modem? DSL? something else?)
You'll probably find it easier and more effective (and safer) to use a small household switch/router like a Linksys WRT54G or similar product from another vendor. Easy to connect to, has some basic security built in, will do what you seem to want it to do.

Well, that will make it a little harder. Both machines are running Windows XP, service pack 3? If so you can probably use Internet Connection Sharing. See if this article helps: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/ -B-
