If you have a newish laptop it will have a built-in adapter and associated software. If you buy an external adapter, e.g. a USB connection, the software will be included or you can use Windows Wireless Zero Configuration.

XP home edition can access wifi, no special software is needed. However, hardware is needed - a wifi card.As Burr said, laptops have built in wifi connections. The wifi card is built inside the laptop. The card can be turned on and off to save the laptop's battery and prevent others from hacking into the computer. Usually there is a button or switch with a light you can press to turn on the card.If you have a desktop or an old laptop without wifi you can buy a card for either one at a retail electronics store. If I helped let me know!
