You Might Not Have permission to use this network resource
Can’t set up local area network.Had two computers (A & B) linked through a D-Link router. Router connects to the internet through a high-speed cable-modem. Computer A is the setup computer for the router configuration. Both computers use Windows XP home, SP-3. Not on any server.Computer B crashed and had to be professionally recovered. During recovery, we discovered Computer B has to be replaced. Purchased C (a used Dell Dimension) for that purpose, with Windows XP Home already installed. Upgraded C to SP-3, and added it to the network as follows (in sequence): on C, used onboard Add Network Place Wizard to add an A folder (Documents and Settings) as a Network Place, and a B folder (Documents and Settings) as a Network Place. On C, a C folder (Shared Documents) appeared by itself as a Network Place. On A and B, used onboard Network Wizard to add a C folder (Shared Documents) as a Network Place.A, B & C all reach the internet through the router with no trouble. A & B can reach C over the LAN. But A & B cannot reach each other over the LAN, and C cannot reach either A or B over the LAN. Any attempt results in the following error message:“\\xxxx\yyy [where xxxx is the path andyyy is the folder name] is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Not enough server storage is available to process this command.”After much research online, tried the following without success (still got the same message).Tried troubleshooting with Network Troubleshooter, twice, including the pinging process from each computer. No luck (and each computer successfully pinged the others) Tried re-setting up the LAN from A, using the onboard “Set up a home or small office network” and the existing Workgroup. Then also ran the onboard “Set up a home or small office network” on B & C using the existing Workgroup. Did not use a Windows Installation CD on B & C, as some third-party sites recommended. Assumed the recommendation was for systems without XP installed.Tried the steps in “Microsoft support Article ID: 318030-Last Review: March 26, 2010-Revision: 5.0”, using “Fix it Myself” then “Fix It For Me.” No luck. Tried the steps in “Microsoft support Article ID: 913628-Last Review: January 3, 2008-Revision: 2.2”. No luck. Tried the steps in “Microsoft support Article ID: 281248-Last Review: January 13, 2006-Revision: 4.2”.Tried setting up the LAN from A, using the onboard “Set up a home or small office network” and a new Workgroup (new name). Then also ran the onboard “Set up a home or small office network” on B & C using the new Workgroup. Did not use a Windows Installation CD, as some third-party sites recommended. Think the recommendation was for systems without XP installed. None of the computers had passwords for the Administrative User, so tried assigning passwords. No difference. Have run out of ideas. Cannot do a clean install of XP on A & B because, have nowhere to store the apps and data using the LAN. Have second HDs on both A & B, but am afraid a clean install of XP on the HD where it resides will render the second HD useless for restoring apps and data. Help, please.1 person got this answerI do too
