XP to Win 7 file sharing works, but 7 to 7 fails?
Hi, I've got three machines: 2 win7 machines and an XP machine. They are all connected via a Linksys WRT54G router. I can go to start->Run and type \\192.168.1.102 on the XP machine and I get propmted for a username and password. I log in and all works well. But trying to connect in the same way from the windows 7 machine, I get: Windows cannot access \\192.168.1.102. (error code 0x800704cf) I've tried completely disabling the firewall on both windows 7 machines, but get the same error. Can anyone suggest any tips? It seems sharing is correctly configured if it works logging in from the XP machine to the 7 machine. Thanks... -Ben

Hi Ben, I suggest you check the following link first: Networking home computers running different versions of Windows http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Networking-home-computers-running-different-versions-of-Windows Also, do you have Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter installed? If this is the case, you can check the solution in the following thread: problem with windows 7 conncecting to windows xp http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpronetworking/thread/d4c22530-26ea-4067-b206-f3dca07f26f1 "It appears the issue is related to the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, which was evidently installed with a driver update around the first week of April. Even though the adapter is disabled, it appears that any changes that you make to the settings on your "normal" wireless adapter also need made on this one. For me, this included enabling NetBIOS over TCP/IP (under IPv4 settings) and ensuring IPv6 was disabled. Again, THE INTERFACE IS DISABLED, but these changes still "magically" made my sharing work immediately."
