XP on the Fritz! System Recovery = Blue Screen of Death!?
Hey, everyone.Recently, I upgraded from SP2 to SP3, however the install of SP3 didn't go smoothly. First, the installation was interrupted, the next time I tried, the install shield froze and had to be shut down. I got an error message "Windows XP has been partially updated and may not work properly."My audio disappeared ("No Device Connected" or something to that effect), and my desktop Theme kept switching between XP Media Center and Classic. I tried uninstalling whatever parts of SP3 made the cut before the install shield was terminated via good old Add/Remove Programs, but access was denied. I also kept getting Win32 error messages: "Generic Host Process for Win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close." The problem files being svchost.exe.mdmp and appcompat.txt, according to the error report. These symptoms, along with the system running a lot slower than normal, were also symptoms that were on my dad's computer - to which I had recently connected an external hard drive while he had Auto Run enabled. I thought that at least part of the problem could be a virus, and ran several virus scans using Trend Micro that so far have come up empty. Since then, I have successfully installed SP3 by downloading it off the Microsoft website instead of through Windows Update, and have my audio came back for a little while (it's gone again). And it will still flicker to the Classic theme. So I tried using System Restore to go back to way before all this started happening, only to get an error message saying that (paraphrased) "Windows could not restore the system. No changes have been made to your computer."Getting fed up and figuring my poor computer is probably due for a fresh start anyway, I backed up all my files and got ready to do a System Recovery. I restarted my computer and hit F10 to get to the Recovery Screen, however immediately following the PC Angel loading screen was the Blue Screen of Death. (STOP 0x0000007B [0xF7A9C640, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000]) The Blue Screen told me to run the CHKDSK utility to check for hard drive corruption, and run a virus scan. And who am I to argue with the Blue Screen of Death? However, CHKDSK gave the thumbs up and told me that everything was A-OK, and Trend found Microsoft Vulnerabilities. However, when I try to connect to update.microsoft.com to fix them, the page is unable to display (as seen in the following screen shot), even though my internet is clearly working. So, frankly, I'm stumped. Here is a screen shot of my desktop: http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u13/inveni/wtfisgoingonnn.pngAlso, have some system information.OS Name Microsoft Windows XP ProfessionalVersion 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Build 2600OS Manufacturer Microsoft CorporationSystem Manufacturer EMAXSSystem Model COMPUTERSystem Type X86-based PCProcessor x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~2800 MhzBIOS Version/Date Intel Corp.
