XP log-on
Computer recently shut off during power failure. At restart, log-on screen came up - not normal; always used to just go to desktop without logon - "To begin, click your user name" but no selection shows; only thing I can do at this screen is "Turn off Office desktop" which places in standby, turns computer off or restarts. Suggestions/solutions welcome. Thanks!1 person needs an answerI do too

Thank you, sir. I've done that but with no success. The login box comes up with my username filled in but it will not recognize my password. Not normally having to go through that exercise, I don't remember what password I may have originally entered, but I have tried every password that I have ever used and none of them work. Any other suggestions???

Suggestions/solutions welcome. Thanks! You haven't told us which version of Win XP your are using (Home, Professional or Media edition). Access procedures differ slightly. However, I fear the power failure might have corrupted important files on your computer. Even so, it will be worth trying the following steps, which may help you to regain access to your computer.Try booting into Safe Mode.To do so, press the F8 key repeatedly as the computer starts. The resulting screen will offer various boot options. Scroll up or down to the list of options to 'Safe Mode'. Then, press the Return key.Hopefully, your computer will now display a sign in screen, which includes the name of every User Account that is present on your machine. The name of one of these accounts should be 'Administrator'.However, the sign in screen might not display any list of accounts. If it includes a box for you to enter the account name, you should type Administrator.Sign into the 'Administrator' account.By default, the built in Administrator account in Win XP has no password - so unless you have previously set a password for the Administrator account, you should not enter anything in the password field (leave it blank). Please note - the Administrator user account should be reserved for trouble shooting and configuration changes only. It is not suitable for day to day use.Once you have used Safe Mode to sign into the Administrator account, open Control Panel and double click on User Accounts.Click on 'Change an Account' and select the name of your personal User Account (NOT the Administrator account)Click on 'Remove password'. (I have assumed that you do not want a sign-in password on your computer.)Save your changes.Reboot your computer. This time, you should be able to access your own user account. If the welcome screen contains a password box, leave it blank.
