XP home and domain compatibility
Hi. I am a new server admin and I have a few questions about XP home and domains. I hope this is the right place to ask. I realize that XP home can not be a domain client, but I also have read that XP home can have roaming profiles and can access Domain shares. I am setting up a domain controller using SAMBA for a food pantry (my budget is $0.00 with donated hardware), so I can not upgrade to an actual MS server or even XP pro. Anyway, one of the boxes that will be a member of the Domain is an XP home box, and I want users to have to load their profile and network share when they go to use the machine. Is there anyway I can make this happen on XP home? I would love to be able to manage it under group policy as well, but it sounds like that is out of the question. Just some background so you can understand what I am trying to accomplish here. Right now, the food pantry has a few computers which the manager lets anyone use. At least one of the machines stores sensitive information about all the clients and anyone has access to this machine. I want to move this information to a server and give only certain people access to it. I would also like to be able to set policies for the machines so people must have an account to use the computers and I can restrict permissions for certain groups. I have also had problems with computers being changed out without my knowledge and then all the settings I added all of a sudden disappear and I am asked to find files that weren't migrated, etc. With a domain, I would have to be consulted before new machines are added and if I get group policy to work properly, then a new computer just needs to get a copy of the policy and it is ready to go without me having to physically be there. Anyway, I have a working test server setup and a machine connected and working just fine. I ran into the snag when I realized that one of the machines (in fact the machine that needs backing up and restriction the most) is an XP home machine and I am not sure if there is any good way to accomplish my goals with it. Thanks in advance.1 person needs an answerI do too
