XP System Information shows the wrong amount of memory
I have 384 MB of RAM installed, but my System Information reports only 256 MB of Total Physical Memory. Is this a problem? Am I getting use of all of my installed RAM or not? If my machine is not using all of my RAM, how do I get it to do so?I use Windows XP Home Edition version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600 on Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop. My BIOS, which is the most up-to-date reported by Dell, is Phoenix Technologies A14.My laptop has two memory slots. I have a 256 MB chip in slot 1 and a 128 MB chip in slot 2. Both chips, tested individually and with both installed by Memtest86 show no errors. My BIOS reports that I have 384 MB of memory. The My Computer/System Properties/General tab reports 384 MB of RAM. But System Information only reports 256 MB.If I switch the placement of the chips, i.e., install the 128 MB chip in slot 1 and the 256 MB chip in slot 2, then the BIOS and My Computer/System Properites continue to report 384 MB of total RAM, but System Information only reports 128 MB of Total Physical Memory. So System Information seems to report the amount of Total Physical Memory only for the chip in slot 1.This discrepancy raises my concern that my machine may not be using all 384 MB of the RAM I have installed. Is my system making use of all of my installed RAM?And even if I am getting the benefit of all of my RAM, a compulsive part of me would rest easier if System Information reported the correct amount of Total Physical Memory. How can I get it to do so?Thanks for your responses. 1 person needs an answerI do too
