XP Smart Security 2010
I have a client that got hit by this spyware and it has destroyed the file associations. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpsecurity/thread/815f14d7-577f-46a9-94c5-ebb7f631be08/ Is there any way to restore these? I removed 190 infections in safe mode with MalwareBytes and thought I had it taken care of. Now whenever she opens a file, it opens the file association dialog box asking how she wants to run this. Any suggestions?Todd A Reibling1 person needs an answerI do too

Frankly, with that many infections I would do a clean install. However, if you are really sure the machine is now clean run Doug Knox's .exe fix. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htmMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

In your case, I suggest to contact Microsoft Anti-Malware team support and ask them to help you to resolve this problem: https://consumersecuritysupport.microsoft.com/default.aspx?productkey=pcsafetymalware&faq=1&mytask=diagnostics You also might consider to use system restore or use Windows CD to do repair .

The problem with Doug Knox's .exe is that it comes in .zip file and you normally can't run it too. You may download .reg fix file directly from here http://bit.ly/8ZhB1V (redirects to Google Docs site, don't worry it's safe). More info about XP Smart Security 2010 can be found here. Good luck!

I've had no problems running Doug's fix on many infected machines. The workaround would be to download it to a known-clean machine (which you should be doing anyway since the infected machine needs to stay off the Internet/LAN) and unzip it there. No offense meant, but I can't recommend someone download anything from an unproven source whether that source says it's safe or not.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
