XP SP3 Reinstall yields in slower computer, lots of hang ups, delayed write failing, and bsod.
Hi Everyone;Thank you all so much for putting time and effort into helping so many people. I figured I'd open with an acknowledgment first.I am very weary about my computer. I've already spent days and days trying to resolve a bunch of issues. Literally my computer has been hampering my work since the middle of January!I have a Dell Dimension 4700 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz 2.99Ghz and 3.25 GB of Ram, with a Hitachi 500GB HDS721050CLA362 as the primary (Disk0) Drive and a Seagate 1TB ST31000528AS (Disk1) secondary storage drive with Windows XP SP3. I've insalled all of the updates (including windows.net frame work 1.1, 2.something etc).I have avast antivirus and it's always kept up to date as well as ad-aware and malbyte's anti malware.I also recently purchased a Thermaltake BlacX Docking Station and a 2TB Hitachi 3.5 Drive as well. I am attempting to have 2 backups of my work, as I've lost valuable data in the past.Originally I had only 2GB of Ram, but I knew my computer could handle 4GB because I confirmed these specs with the Dell people who assembled the machine. Right now I have 4 GB of ram as confirmed in the setup menu.I also originally had a Maxtor 80GB as disk0 and no disk1.I opted to replace the 80GB Maxtor because it's 6 years old already and I run Adobe CS4 production Premium. I figured 500GB would accommodate my OS & the large programs and the large temp files they generate. When I reinstalled the OS on the Maxtor I had issues formatting. It would hang at 94% or I'd get a BSOD on start up. Then I used the 500GB Hard Drive and ran the XP Installation on that and was fine.I've been using it for a week but I've noticed its incredibly slow, despite having all this ram and a clean os installation.I also get BSOD when I run the virus scanner OR when I'm attempting to copy files from one HD to another (either from the primary drive to the slave drive OR to the 2TB docked drive, or from the slave drive to the docked drive or from the slave drive to the primary drive). Other times I'll get an absurd copy time for a relatively small file i.ie. a 300mb file will suddenly take over an hour to copy.I've run diagnostics and diskscan and get nothing wrong. Windows will finish "checking" the disk and not tell me something was wrong. I look at the disk manager tool and all the drives have "(healthy)" next to them. The skeptic in me feels like this happens when I install the .net framework updates. I've already reinstalled this OS twice.Isn't .net important to the functionality of the machine though?I am so lost in this and i spend the better part of my days googling solutions and trying to implement them to no avail; i've disabled "write caching" and re-enabled it. I've Gone through a bunch of procedures to prevent the delayed writing failure. I do not have any kind of file sharing software or torrents on my machines at all and I do not share my files. My firewall is enabled. As far as I know, I've done everything by the book and to the letter, so I feel like my computer sould run amazingly, not like I have a lemon and am terrified I will lose all of my work despite that I have enough space to back up the whole universe. Thanks again for all of your help! It is truly appreciated in advance and always.-P1 person needs an answerI do too

might look into virtual memory. if it is set to auto, then its stats might be overstated because of all the ram you have now. as a test, ensure there is only one pagefile preferably on the system drive. also, set its size to a min of 2 and max of 1152. although you have lots of ram, it is highly unlikely it will need more than 1152. but if it does, windows will tell you and you can increase it. -- db`...><)))> ."Peter Piper P" wrote in message news:32eaa511-644a-4099-98c6-62ef69d9b077...Hi Everyone;Thank you all so much for putting time and effort into helping so many people. hey databaseben. thanks so much. i tried what you said, didn't work. though i found out that it might actually be my thermaltake device. i plugged it into my laptop, which had been wrking flawlessly. and sure enoug i started getting bsod's here too! now the question is what to do about that. it seems to install something that freaks out my computer.here is another update: i plugged my primary drive into my thermaltake dock and ran a virus scanner on it via my laptop (that is now working again after having safe restarted) and it found a jerusalem-zerodate virus in my pagefile.sys and another type of virus in a different file. its really bizarre, as i haven't downloaded anything on that drive and its only a week old...

well, it good to know you narrowed down the possibilities. however, I am not familiar with your Thermaltake device but logically if the peripheral device is causing the system to crash then dont install it. perhaps, it is defective or incompatible with the o.s. maybe there is an updated driver from its home site that corrects the problem. also, there may be an issue with power. so if the device is usb powered, then maybe it needs to be plugged into a usb bus that has a powered adaptor as the computer cannot provide enough power to it through its native usb ports. -- db`...><)))> ."Peter Piper P" wrote in message news:13dfccf8-8699-4df9-96e6-971b646f46c2...hey databaseben. thanks so much. i tried what you said, didn't work. though i found out that it might actually be my thermaltake device. i plugged it into my laptop, which had been wrking flawlessly. and sure enoug i started getting bsod's here too! now the question is what to do about that. it seems to install something that freaks out my computer.db`...>-)))> `...>-)))> share the nirvana mann
