My XP machine will no longer perform automatic updates; this started this week. The "shield" appears in the lower right hand, and a downloading updates 0 % appears when I roll the mouse cursor over it. When I attempt to go to the Windows Update site, I get a "Explorer cannot display the site", when I click on update automatically, I get a "checking to see if you have the correct update software" message, which then trips to a "website has encountered a problem and cannot display..." I also get an "Explorer cannot display the site" message if I try to click to Windows Update website from the Security Center. Also, I have begun getting annoying site redirects to these morons: http://lpgen.info/mylpgen/regerrors1/64x1219458_r1?c=camp3 as well as something called News9 which is really a shill site for some pyramid scheme. Somebody here must know what is going on; care to share? If this computer is infected, I also have about seven years of digital photography on a series of RAID drives and externals, all of which are now disconnected from the computer and sitting idle. Sadly, until I get whatever this problem is, so is my business sitting idle. Appreciate any and all advice/help/solutions.alan2 people need an answerI do too

Is it kept up to date and is it up to date now? Reboot and logon as an administrative user. Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You canrelease the CTRL key after clicking each time. Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates(deselect any others) and install it. Reboot and logon as administrative user. If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at atime. Rebooting as needed. The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommendagainst the "Windows Search" one and any of the "Office Live" ones or"Windows Live" ones for now. I would completely avoid theOptional Hardware updates. Also - I do not see any urgent need to installInternet Explorer 8 at this time.
