XP Pro SP3 freezes on transferring files even after clean boot.
I run XP PRO SP3. Lately my computer started freezing when I transfer files - although the mouse arrow still moves around. The only way to get going again is to reboot. It started after an update, but I do not know which update. It happens even after a clean boot. Can anybody help?

Thank you for your quick response. I tried it in safe mode and it still froze. However, there was a difference in some cases. In some cases I got a message " cannot copy, file is in use" although the file was definitely not in use.

Hi abeperl, 1. At which location are you transferring the files? Is it an external location?2. Did you identify any application causing issues when checked in clean boot?3. Are the files you are transferring present on a network or are shared? Method 1:You may perform a system restore to an earlier point when the issue was not present. The System Restore tool uses restore points to return system files and settings to an earlier point in time. You can use it to restore the operating system to a point in time in which you did not experience the issue.Note: When you use System restore to restore the computer to a previous state, programs and updates that you installed are removed. To do this, there must be a System Restore point at which the logon was successful. You may refer to the below links for assistance on performing a system restore -http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084Method 2:You may even check if you are getting any errors in the Event viewer and if you are getting any, do let us know the details. Refer to the below link for details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427Method 3:You may check if the hard disk is having errors or corrupt sectors, which is causing the issue.Refer to the below provided link and check:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265 Hope this helps. Thanks,Meghmala – Microsoft SupportVisit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think
