XP PRO system running very slow!
slow?XP PRO, SP 3, MS Updates all installed. 1.96 Gb of RAM. 3.20GhzIt takes the system forever to boot up, the user finally logs in and it take forever before she can open up a program, (no matter what program it is: IE 8, AutoCAD, Explorer, MSCONFIG etc)What I have done:1) Installed and ran the following Scans:Malwarebytes, Glary Utilites, Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware. some Malware, Spyware and Adware were found and removed, I ran each program at least 2 times just to make sure there were no more problems. I installed and updated all of the scan software in normal mode than ran the scans in SAFEMODE. 2) Ran Trend Micro Anti Virus program and not viruses were found.3) Ran SCANDISK, it took several hours (step 4 of 5 took over 6 1/2 hours to complete, it was still running when I left the office and I don't know how long step 5 took) and when I returned the next day the logon screen was up.4) Defrag the hard drive - 2 times - both times it took forever. 5) went into MSCONFIG and unchecked all the startup programs and booted the system and still it is taking the system forever to boot up and login and do anything on the system.6) Hard drive has over 95 GB of free space so space is not an issue7) deleted the Temporary Internet Files.8) checked Device Manager for conflicts and there are none. What else can I do to check this system out before I format and install everything back on to the system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in Advance!Robin1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi,Did you try safe mode, I mean to ask do system appear same way in safemode? Try creating different profile and see if problem persists. Also Scandisk shouldn't take that long, try chkdsk /f. Post back the findings..

I would suggest using ccleaner to see what programs are running during startup you may be able to remove some you dont want. Also maybe running the registry clean in clceaner too, But its a risk as modifying the registry can cause problems and some people advise you against this on the forums.MyPcHealth ------ Free Tools

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder. Open the file, and place the cursor anywhere in the file, select Edit, Select All to highlight all text and copy and paste into the body of your message. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more informative.Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak? What email programme is being used? Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any from than more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. You will see a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. This places a copy of the report into your Clipboard. Paste into the body your message. Make sure that this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.Select Start, Control Panel, Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box before "Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to see the second item. You should also make certain that the box before "Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell

i am running a Seagate SeaTools for Windows checking the hard drive and it is taking a long time for the Long Generic test. Once this is done I can perform all your suggestions and post back. I just wanted to let you all know that I am working on this issue and did not forget about posting back. Thanks so much!

I ran the SeaTools from Seagate and passed all the tests. Ran the Dell Diagnostics program and it hung up on me, i had to unplugged the system and when i tried to turn it on it would not. Dell is sending out a technican to replace the motherboard, memory and power supply and possibly the hard drive. will see how the system runs after all is replaced. Thanks for your suggestions. I will post back with the outcome.
