XP PC Acces to a Vista Laptop on Home Network
I have two XP PCs and a Vista Laptop on a wireless home network. I can access the Vista Laptop from one of the XP machines but not the other. All have the same work group name. When I try from the XP machine that doesn't work I get a beep and message that the Vista machineis not accessable - log on failure. On my other XP Machine I get a dialog box to log in to the Laptop with my user ID and password for that machine. It works great. I think I have both XP machinesconfigured in the same way. I'm using Norton 360 on all three PCs. Any ideas?1 person needs an answerI do too

What is the complete text of the "log on failure" message?

Here is the exact text:\\Holz-laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer. Then I have to click OK to close the dialog box. Of course I'm the network administartor I just don't know how to fix this. AS I mentioned in the first message it works OK from another XP PC. I've check the fire wall trust level on my Vista machine for the other two PCs and it seems to be the same.

Thanks for the details! The problem is on the laptop computer. I've seen it several times in Windows XP, and I'll give the steps that fix it in XP. Please try them in Vista and let us know the result: If the computer that can't be accessed runs Windows XP Professional: 1. Click Start > Run , type secpol.msc in the box, and click OK . 2. Click Local Policies . 3. Click User Rights Assignment . 4. Click Access this computer from the network and make sure that the Everyone group is included. 5. Click Deny access to this computer from the network and make sure that the Everyone group is NOT included. If the computer that can't be accessed runs Windows XP Home Edition, secpol.msc isn't available. To make the required user rights assignments: 1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools . 2. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Resource Kit Tools > Command Shell . 3. Type these lines at the command prompt exactly as shown: net user guest /active:yes ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

I thought this might help but no luck yet. I don't have secpol.msc on my Vista Lap top. I tried to run it from the command prompt but it's not there. Assuming that the problem is on th laptop I went into the sharing settings and was able to get the shared folders to show up in the "my network places" directory on the XP Desk Top. The only folder I can open is the public folder. I then tried to change the security settings on the other folders to be the same as the public folder. I've done that now and I have "everyone" allowed to read the folders. Unfortunately itstill doesn't work . I can't get access. The public folder is on my C: drive in the laptop and all of the files I really want to share on the network are on the F: drive (a second drive in the Laptop) Can I move the public folder to the F: Drive somehow? If I could do that, I could move all of the other folders into the public folder.

The error message that you're getting indicates a problem with user rights assignments. There's nothing built into the home versions of XP/Vista that can fix it. Follow these steps on the laptop computer: 1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools . 2. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Resource Kit Tools > Command Shell . 3. Type these lines at the command prompt exactly as shown (they're case-sensitive): net user guest /active:yes ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest If those commands, which fix the problem on Windows XP, don't do the job, type these, too: ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Everyone ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Everyone You might have to reboot the laptop to make the changes take effect.

Steve,Thanks for your reply. I downloaded the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools. There were many Service pack and the like which I did not download. I tried to run it but after the first command line I got the response "system error 5 has occorred. Access is denied. I then tried the second comand line and got the response error OpenPolicy -1073741790.In the mean time I copied my public folder to the F: drive and did a registry edit to show the new location. Now I can move all of these files that I want to share on the home network to this public2 folder and access it from all PC's on th Network. I'll probably stop now. Thanks for your help.

You're welcome. I think there's one more step needed to fix the problem on Vista, and it wasn't needed on XP. I've labeled it as 2a below. Please try this: 1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools . 2. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Resource Kit Tools 2a. Right-click Command Shell and click Run as administrator .

Thanks for trying that and giving the results. The error messages indicate that there's one more step needed to make it work on Windows Vista. I've changed the previous step 2 into 2a and 2b below. Please try this solution: 1. Download and install the Windows 2003 Server Resource Kit Tools . 2a. Click Start > All Programs > Windows Resource Kit Tools . 2b. For Windows Vista, right-click Command Shell and click Run as administrator .
