XP PC's hang using files on Vista PC
I had an all XP network of a laptop and3 PCs and a Netgear DG834N router. One of the PC's is the data store for the network and the laptop and others have been able to use thesefiles, especially FrontPage2003 webs without any problems.Very foolishly, it now seems, I swapped the XP data store machine for a brand new Vista Business PC, now when ever the XP machines access say FrontPage based webs, Word documents (Word 2003) or work on image using Photoshop Elementson the Vista Data store, the XP machine doing it hangs. Here are some detailed observations if anyone can point to a solution I would be grateful, I am about to relegate the Vista machine to just a pretty picture PC(which is all Vista seems to offer over a good XP system). 1.The other machines (XP) can access the internet after they hang when using FrontPage 2003, Photoshop Elements, or My Computer(if accesing the mapped Vista Drive after a program hang) .Interestingly, in the last test from an XP laptop, once the hang occured by FP2003 just trying to open the image folder from within a web stored on the Vista machine; the XP laptop machine ping, found the IP address of the Vista PC but all the 'requests timed out'. However seconds afterwards I pinged the XP laptop from the Vista machine and the ping was totally successful, no drops etc. Also please note that I have the Vista machine backing up important business data folders to other PC's (all XP) on the network using Karens Replicator, which does this at a set schedule or at my behest, this runs without problem and sometimes takes 30 minutes or more as 4 GB of data is involved. So it seems the problem is not occuring when the Vista machine accesses/writes to folders on the other machines which are all XP.Other points to note:a. The XP laptop does not hang when it accesses Quick Book 2005 Pro data file stored on the Vista PC, in fact the file can be open on the laptop and accessed for a good period with no problems, the major hangs from the XP laptop and two other XP PC's are when FrontPage web folders are being accessed and published, and Word 2003 is being written too and periodically trying to 'Save'.b. When the laptop was then(after network reboot due to last hang) used to access the old data store XP PC to work on a website using FrontPage 2003 as a test it worked perfectly- for ages; amending deleting pages publishing - no problems.c)Next, just a minute afterwards, this old data store XP machine opened FrontPage 2003 and tried to work on a test web on the Vista PC - yep and you guessed it - it hung trying to publish to the web server just like the laptop does!!!!! 2. IP conflict - interesting this, the Netgear DG834N, keeps showing in 'Attached Devices' the laptop and one other PC leaving and later on after a refresh joining again. However both these machines are Wireless but when they have disappeared they still work fine on the network, seeing all other machines and access the internet. Please note I have tried a brand new router and this does the same and also does nothing to solve the hanging.I even gave specific IP addresses to every item on the network and rebooted the whole network and no it did not solve the hanging problem. 3. Safe mode with Network does not give a network I am afraid, the laptop errors saying no such mapped drive available and the whole Vista PC is not visible in My Networks from any other XP machine. 4. Tried'Clean Boot'as well - exaclty the same problem as above - network is unavailble in this setting. 5. I have used the on board Marvel Yukon Gigabit network card and then disabled it and used a Netgear GA311 PCI which uses drivers from Vista itself - BOTH suffer the hanging problem. Please note that I tried disabling IPv6 as I found on a forum that this could be a problem but it made no differrence. The auto tuning disable has been on my PC for some time but I keep on having to re-apply it, normally after certain updates. It has been disabled using this command as Outlook 2007 would not download email from the server until this fix was found by our Microsoft Gold Hosting Parnters - this Vista Office 2007 machine was ready to be ditched back then - even MS forums were and still are screaming with people unable to get OL2007 to stop hanging downlaoding email - anyway thanks to our hosts this is no longer a problem for me. If anyone has followed all this thanks very much - if you have any ideas they would be most welcome, and yes the best idea is probably stick with XP!!!! but I do want to try and fix it. Thanks Phil
