XP Netbook with 16GB drive and hiberfil.sys is taking 2GB of space
Hello, I have an HP Netbook running Windows XP, it has a 16GB drive and I am trying to free up space. Currently I only have <1GB of free space. I used Diskspace Fan and see that there is a file called hiberfil.sys that is taking up 2GB. I have researched the file and found the size is in relation to my 2GB of RAM. Hibernation is not turned on and does not show up in the Power Options. When I look into c: with no hidden files, I cannot see the file hiberfil.sys. Is there a service I can turn off or something else I can do to get rid of this file. Does the laptop need the file? Thanks, Peter 1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi PeterGibbons, The Hiberfil.sys hidden system file is located in the root folder of the drive where the operating system is installed. The Windows Kernel Power Manager reserves this file when you install Windows. The size of this file is approximately equal to how much random access memory (RAM) is installed on the computer. The computer uses the Hiberfil.sys file to store a copy of the system memory on the hard disk when the hybrid sleep setting is turned on. If this file is not present, the computer cannot hibernate. a. To clean up the space, you may run disk Cleanup Tool Description of Disk Cleanup Tool the in Windows XP:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310312 b. Also delete all the unwanted or unused programs from the computer. Regards:Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.
