XP Mode network does not work in bridged mode
I have XP Mode running on Win7 Pro 64-bit. The host notebook computer has two NICs: an Intel 82577LC gigabit Ethernet and an Atheros AR9285 wifi.
When I create a network interface in the VM to bridge with the Intel Ethernet NIC, it does not communicate. It reports a connection, but it has a yellow exclamation mark and fails to get DHCP. If I specify valid IP settings (instead of using
DHCP), it still fails to communicate. The Atheros wifi NIC bridges successfully; it's just the Ethernet NIC that won't bridge.
I've tested the situation where I disable the host's wifi (so only the Ethernet is working), and I set a single network device in the VM using NAT mode. This works correctly, and the VM gets a 192.168.x.x address. I can browse the web, etc,
but I can't use my business applications through NAT. I need to get bridged mode working so the VM can use a valid LAN address.
I've updated the host's Intel Ethernet NIC driver to the latest version. I've also completely uninstalled and reinstalled the WinXP mode components. Still, I've been unable to get the Ethernet connection to work in bridged mode.

In case it's necessary, here's the ipconfig /all from both the host and the VM. I currently have a single adapter on the VM, set to the host's Ethernet NIC.

It turns out the ShrewSoft DNS Proxy service was the cause of this problem. This computer uses the 64-bit ShrewSoft VPN client, and when I disable that Windows service, Windows XP mode can bridge with the Ethernet connection.

The problem has somehow resurfaced (it actually came back a few weeks ago, but I hadn't had time to look into it until now). I've made sure the Shrewsoft VPN DNS proxy service is still disabled. What's more, the problem is also happening on a
desktop machine as well, which doesn't have any VPN client installed. It was working until earlier this week.
The desktop is an HP Z400 workstation, about a month old. The NIC is a Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit. WinXP Mode can access the Internet just fine when it has an adapter in NAT mode, but when I switch it to bridged, it can't get DHCP, and static
IP settings don't allow any communication either.

I've traced the problem to the use of IP phones at my office. They're Mitel phones that plug into the network jack at a desk, and provide a bridged Ethernet port in the back for the computer to plug into. On the affected computers in my office,
if I plug the computer directly into the wall jack, WinXP bridged networking works correctly.
Unfortunately this isn't the whole story, since there are at least as many working computers plugged into IP phones as there are malfunctioning ones. Also, if I take a working computer to the desk of a computer that can't use bridged WinXP networking,
that working computer still works. Therefore it seems to be some combination of computer and phone that causes WinXP's bridged networking to fail. All of the phones are the same model, and some hardware revisions both work and don't work with given
computers.
At least I feel I'm getting closer to the root of the problem. I'm not sure if MTU is a factor in this, or VLANs (since the phones use VLAN tagging to separate data and voice traffic), or any other number of issues I'm not even aware exist.
