XP Home Edition: Clearing memory (hopefully) on shutdown
Hi All:I wanted to have the memory cleared every time XP was shut down, rather than just for routine maintenance occasionally, so it's always fast on startup. So, I went into the registry editor, HKEY LOCAL MACHINE / SOFTWARE / MICROSOFT / WINDOWS / RUN, and created a new registry key, standard REG_SZ.In the value data field, I put "LogoffScript"="%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks".This key was accepted, and I think is hopefully clearing memory each time before shutdown. However, I have two questions:1) The field to name the key is greyed out, and I can't name it other than "Default". Why is this? How can I name it?2) Some instructions I found on the internet said I should actually create a new String Value here. But the key seems to do the trick. I honestly don't know the difference. Could someone explain this? Which is better? Thanks very much,waynrayn1 person needs an answerI do too

What is the URL link to the WWW site that contains these instructions so we can see what you are doing? You say it is your desire to be always fast on startup... Can you clearly state the problem you are trying to resolve so we can understand the issue? Chances are it is something seen before. Are you trying to reduct the startup time? I specialize in reducing XP startup time ($1 per second) and never added a registry entry to do it. Maybe if I need to know about your trick. What method are you using to accurately measure the startup and shutdown times before and after adjustments to see if it makes a difference? Things like "it seems faster!" don't cut it for me. I measure.I mean... when you get done, it seems that you would be interested to know (in fractions of a second) if your startup/shutdown times are improving or getting worse? You don't need things to be "hopefully" clearing memory. It either is clearing memory or it isn't - and how will you know?I need YOUR votes and points for helpful replies and Propose as Answers. I am saving up for a pony!

The memory is cleared every time you restart the computer. Perhaps you are wanting to clear the pagefile but that wouldn't increase performance at all, all it will do is increase the time it takes to shutdown the machine. So, I went into the registry editor, HKEY LOCAL MACHINE / SOFTWARE /MICROSOFT / WINDOWS / RUN, and created a new registry key, standardREG_SZ.In the value data field, I put"LogoffScript"="%windir%\system32\rundll32.exeadvapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks".This key was accepted, and I think is hopefully clearing memory eachtime before shutdown. That has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with clearing the memory... whoever gave you that advice doesn't know what they are talking about.John
