XP Home/IE6 or IE7, can't install .pfx
Spent over one week trying to get XP Home, IE 7 to install .pfx file. Using Certificate Wizard, I always get the same error at the end: "An internal error occurred. The private key that you are importing may require a Cryptographic Service Provider that is not installed on your system." But I've checked the registry, and the Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0 does seem to be installed. There is a key called "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography\Defaults\Provider\Microsoft Enhanced Cryptographic Provider v1.0", with Subkeys: (Default) (value not set), Image Path, SigInfile, Signature, and Type.I can tell it's machine specific, b/c I've generatedthe .pfx files and imported them using Certificate Wizard on several other machines, including my wife's XP Home, IE 6, without any problems. I've tried .pfx exported from an XP Pro machine, her XP Home machine. I've gotten them successfully (I think) into Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird, but I don't really use these programs -- just downloaded them to see if they would import .pfx files on this machine. I've disabled Windows Firewall, turned off all antivirus software, including SpyBot, AdAware, and AVGFree. I even just downgraded to IE6, but still it won't work. Needless to say, if I try to buy a VeriSign email certificate (digital ID) on this computer, it fails, giving an error like 80070002, and the same error with Comodo (free certificates), error 0x80070002. So I get the cert with another computer, but cannot import it here. I also tried to set the AllUsers\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\machinekeys directory so all users can read/write/modify. Also, it seems like public keys are getting installed but not private ones. In Certificate Wizard, I'm seeing my own name under Other People, but nothing under Personal. In certmgr.msc, I do see my name under Personal, but I'm not sure why/how. I have also turned off the automatic login, and setup a password for my main account, so I get the Welcome screen, have to click my name, and type a password. My main account has admin rights. I'm wondering if Visual Studio 2005/SQL Server have anything to do with the problem, but I really don't want to go through uninstalling those if I don't have to. Otherwise, I'm just out of options, patience, and hair. Please help, what am I missing? Brett1 person needs an answerI do too
