XP Backup Utility Problems
I am running XP Professional SP 3. Backup utility hangs up at "preparing to backup using shadow copy". I am using the wizard: "Backup wizard (advanced )""Backup everything on this computer""Backing up to F drive" which is a second drive on this computer and has more available space than drive to back up.When I start is just hangs at "preparing to copy using shadow copy. I does create a 2kb backup file. I have successfully used the utility on this same drive a couple months ago.

Hi milehighplus, 1. Check the status of Volume shadow copy service in services window. To check follow these steps:a. Click Start, click on run.b. Type services.msc in the search boxc. Search for the Volume shadow copy serviceMake sure the start- up type is automatic. Steps to set the services to automaticd. Search for the servicee. Right click on the servicef. If the service is stopped then Start the serviceg. Select Propertiesh. And in the Start-up type select Automatic 2. I would suggest you to follow the below steps and see if it works fine:a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.b. Type the following commands at a command prompt. Press ENTER after you type each command.* cd /d %windir%\system32* Net stop vss (may use procexp.exe to kill the service if it don't stop)* Net stop swprv* regsvr32 ole32.dll * regsvr32 oleaut32.dll* regsvr32 vss_ps.dll* vssvc /register* regsvr32 /i swprv.dll* regsvr32 /i eventcls.dll* regsvr32 es.dll* regsvr32 stdprov.dll* regsvr32 msxml.dll* regsvr32 msxml3.dllc. Perform a backup operation to verify that the issue is resolved. Adding to this Windows 7 makes backup and restore not only faster and easier, but more flexible, too.To know more about windows 7 features, you may refer the below link:http://windows.microsoft.com/windows-7 Regards:Samhrutha G S - Microsoft Support.Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.

Samhrutha,Thank you for the reply. The Volume Shadow Copy Service was set to manual. I changed it to automatic as you indicated.Fo the CMD steps you suggested I only made it to NET STOP SWPRV. I tried to stop it and it says it is not started. I tried to start it and it says it can not be found. I do not see the process swprv in my list of processes on windows task manager. I have rebooted and repeated the steps with the same results.

I was having exactly the same problems and followed all of the above steps and got it to work again. I did change another service besides Volume Shadow Copy to start automatically rather than manually. It is the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider. Then I rebooted and when I did the stop commands in the CMD window, it did stop the services. I then proceeded to register all of the dll's as described. Thankyou much
