XP Administrator cannot install new programs
When I try to install a program I receive an error"You must be logged in as an administrator to install this program."I am the only user of XP Home and am listed as a Computer Administrator. I used System Restore to go back to a time when this error did not appear, but after restoring the system I received the same error message. I created a new account with Administrator privileges with same error. Safe Mode worked OK. I used regedit to check permissions and they indicate I have Administrator privileges.1 person got this answerI do too

Does it happen with all programs or only one? Your Subject line indicates the former while your message body is ambiguous. Please post back with the answers/results to:The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't?The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?Be sure the computer is clean:http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I first noticed the problem when I tried installing an upgrade to Win Utilities two days ago. I then tried several other programs which I previously installed. Some of these give the error message and some don't. Win Utilities, is an example of where the error occurs. An example where it does not occur is CCleaner. The last program I installed before noticing the problem was an upgrade to Total Commander two weeks ago. It will still install. The last program I downloaded was Microsoft Money Sunset Edition, which I did not install but I started the install process and did not get the error message.I believe the computer is clean. I ran full scans using latest updates of Microsoft Security Essentials, Microsoft Removal Tool, MalWarebytes Anti Malware, and Spybot - Search and Destroy with no problems.

Hmmm. I would have to concur with you that this isn't malware. You've done enough scanning. It certainly seems like a problem with permissions, but unfortunately not one that is limited to your own user account. You could try a couple of things:1. Run the System File Checker: Start>Run>sfc /scannow [OK]. Test.2. If that doesn't help, I would first test the hard drive and the RAM to make sure there are no hardware issues causing weird anomalies.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot3. If everything checks out, maybe you'll need to back up your data and do a repair install.http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmLet me know how that goes for you.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I ran SFC and tested the hardware with no problems. I finally realized I had been saving the registry with ERDN daily so I went back to a time (over four weeks ago) where the problem didn't occur and found that the problem began after I had installed and then uninstalled Comodo firewall but had never removed it from my computer. I used Revo uninstaller to uninstall it, rebooted the computer and the problem disappeared.Thank you very much for your help!

Yes, Comodo has always been problematic. You discovered and solved your issue very cleverly. I'm glad you got things sorted and thanks for taking the time to post the answer.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Just had same problem and found that it was caused by Comodo sandbox if you run out side of sandbox programme installs no problem. If not using Comodo check all your security settings as it is obviously a conflicting problem with Antivirus programmes
