XP - modem issue - works with Westell 327W - now won't work with any other modem
I've been using Westell 327W modem. Contacted Verizon about slow ISP speed. Their tech person accessed my computer remotely and made various changes to settings. Didn't help with speed. They then sent new modem - Westell 7500. However, I now find that while the computer still connects OK with the original Westell 327W, I cannot connect with any other modem, including the new one, and including several others I have that had connected fine in the past. I assume the tech person made some change to some setting that I don't spot that affected the ability of the computer to recognize and connect through a different modem. The modem starts up fine, all lights come on, but when I go to connect, I get an answer that the remote modem doesn't recognize me. What setting is there that controls this. Thanks. Peggy

HiFirst you should know the both the 327W and the 7500 are not just Modems, but they are Modem/Wireless Router combos.Wireless computer do not connect to Modems they connect the Wireless Routers.First use wire between the computer and the Router, and make sure that the 7500 is configured correctly. Here is some help, http://www.ehow.com/how_6935562_install-verizon-westell-7500-modem.htmlThe 7500 comes configured with wep security and password that usually are mentioned on its model sticker. However once it is working with a wire, log again to the 7500 menus and configure the Wireless to be open, Security Off (instructions should be in its manual). Then, try to connect with Wireless.Once connected you should go back to the Router configure it to WPA with password.Alternatively, call Verizon support and ask them to walk you through the process.--------------------------As for Windows XP Wireless configuration.See here, http://www.ezlan.net/wireless.html Jack - Microsoft MVP, Windows Networking. Thanks - I since found out that while I had an internet connection (which I could see), Verizon wasn't recognizing me. Problem was that I had to reinstall Verizon software for new modem, which they hadn't told me I had to do (and didn't provide). Finally stumbled on that and got it solved, but thanks for the input.By-the-way, it didn't do a thing to address the problem of low speed; their rep says it's 1.7 mps to the modem, the best I get if 1.25, and it's usually .8 to 1.0. Probably not your area of expertiseAgain, thanks.

HiIt very good that it is working Now, but for the long run be aware that this software might cause problem. This software (PPPOE, http://www.ezlan.net/PPPOE.html ) is Not needed for Modem/Router.However, your Modem/Router is probably not configured with the Internal ID/PW, the software sort of compensate for it.DSL service varies in "Speed" according to the distance from the Verizon DSLAM (Internet source) and quality of the line.I is Not uncommon that a 1.7Mb/sec. account would yield on your end 1.25Mb/sec.You can ask Verizon to check the lines.
