XP - internet access suddenly stopped working - but ICS is working and can ping Internet IPs
Hi,I'm working on an XP SP2 computer. It is connected to the Internet through a dialup connection. It is also connected to a LAN and it has ICS enabled on the dialup connection. The problem is no Internet access - the owner states the problem began after a computer game crash and subsequent hard reboot.I tried IE, Firefox, Messenger, Thunderbird, etc.All these programs fail instantly when attempting to connect, like they don't recognize that there is an Internet connection. However, I can ping Internet IP addresses, but I can't ping site names like www.google.com.There is a laptop connected to the LAN and it can access the Internet through the shared dialup connection on the problem PC.I have verified the proxy settings are correct in IE and Firefox.I have reset the TCP/IP stack.I also ran the Winsock XP fix tool.Norton was installed, but I ran the Norton Removal tool to completely remove the software.Windows Firewall is disabled. No other security software is installed as far as I can tell.I'm open to any ideas...Thanks for your time,Kendall

ICS isn't a proxy server. Remove all proxy settings and see if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't, there's a problem with DNS resolution, as shown by the fact that you can ping IP addresses but not site names. Check the computer's DNS server address. By default, it should be 192.168.0.1 -- the LAN address of the ICS host computer.Boulder Computer MavenMicrosoft Most Valuable Professional
