XBMC doesn't see Windows 7 RC PC in the workgroup
I'm using windows 7 RC on my PC in dual boot mode and have it connected to a wired home network. Linsys router. I'm having huge problems getting other hardware to see the Win7 pc over a normal SMB workgroup, specifically I can't get my xbox (using Xbox Media Centre) to see the pc on the workgroup. Things I've tried: Turning off the win7 firewall. Turning off password protected sharing got it to see the win7 pc ONCE, but ever since I rebooted the xbox it can't see it anymore. Joining/leaving/rejoining a homegroup. Does anyone have any other ideas of what i could try?

Hi, File sharing is just a little different in windows 7... Many people can't see their xp machines on the network with windows 7 or the windows 7 machine when working on an xp machine. Anyway, if you follow the steps in the walkthrough you'll be ok.http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/If you want to stream video's to your xbox with windows 7, you might want to have a look at the following:http://gizmodo.com/5140691/win-7-tip-xbox-360-streaming-is-buggy-for-now-but-it-still-workskindaKind RegardsFilip Wilms

Cheers for the help man, but the first tutorial basically tells you to just turn password protected sharing off which works for an XP machine trying to access the Win7 machine alright. I've already tried that as I mentioned in my first post. The problem is i'm using an old xbox (not a 360) with a hack and XBMC installed, there are certain features on XBMC that are better than the media streaming with Media Centre on the 360 (which I already have working). Is there anything beyond that which ye might know?

Hi cormacN Have an old xbox streaming fine under se7en Here are the steps I've done: - just create new account ( not specially admin ) user :xbox password:xbox- use ccxgui 1.4 as server to stream videos on your pc ( you have to add shared folders with it ) , choose 1400 as open port and set it to forwarded port on routeur if you have http://www.logic-sunrise.com/telecharger-38828-ccxgui-v1-41.htmlccxgui will run automtically after install as service when booting windows - under win 7 ,share those folders to allow new user "xbox" you have to add manually.- start xbox and then under videos menu on xbmc choose xbmsp network share auto discover" ( or something like that , depend on version you use ) , you should now see your pc list as virtual server with shared folders. You don't need to log as "xbox" to success . I just use my regular account as admin at logon screen .all works fine under seven ! ( yeah , took me a while to find out how to stream xbox under vista first . lol ) regards

Excellent stuff man! I actually got it to work in the end without your workaround and I'm ashamed to say I never wrote down or remembered the steps i took to get it to work, but it all works under normal SMB share nowadays. Dang and blast! But i'm sure other people will find your help useful! :)

Hey dragon. When you say "just create new account" where/how am i creating it ?? You just have to create a new user account under windows config panel as you 'd do the same for any new user . CormacN & Eik0 Glad to help ^^ Another advice if you don't see sometimes your server under xbmc , just disable your anti virus/ firewall , the time you plan to stream videos . regards

Well I've been having a look at it for the last hour or so and this is all the advice i can give: Make sure "network autodiscovery" is turned on for the Win7 PC. Also make sure you're not using the new built in Homegroup network stuff that's new to Win7, I'm pretty sure it doesn't work with SMB share but I could be wrong, I ain't no I.T. guy ;) Make sure that the names for the workgroups for SMB make sense etc. (e.g., in my network I have all the PC's under the name "WORKGROUP"). Sometimes they're under something different like "MSHOME" or have a strange network path. I don't know why but it seems to help with getting all the equipment to "see" each other better. I had a weird one where if only one of the PC's has connected to the network, then XBMC was denied access to the workgroup. Try connecting a 2nd PC and again no idea why, it just seemed to work for me. If i can find anything else I'll post it here. Btw I have Vista on one of the PC's and i didn't have any problems acessing that one with the XBOX, once the workgroup was setup right (i.e., all the PC's were under the same workgroup name). Let me know if you want any of that explained, I know not everyone knows about networks and computery-type stuff :)

My app does not have a username slot, only a password.

Dragon and Cormac - here is a screen of what my Workgroup network looks like as you can see, i took a few stabs at it I tried initially putting the parent drives but apparently that doesn;t work, so i went right to sharing out the specific sub folders i want accessible by the xbox http://img203.imageshack.us/i/workgroupappearance.jpg/

That's fine, once the SMB share works the xbox will see all that. Just make sure you have network autodiscover turned on, it's buried in the network settings for Win7. Also if you don't need it or use it, turn off the homegroup sharing.

For those still struggling, this step put me over the hump > In control panel, on the top right search start typing Workgroup. select change workgroup name select the network id button, then you have two options, select the home computer option, then you will be prompted to restart your computer. Once it is restarted you should be good to go and be able to see your smb shares in xbmc. Hope that works for you.

And hey everyone, thanks for your help today !!! It's greatly appreciated And I swear, I'll wait a few weeks before i start bugging on how to safely remove all the duplicate shares lol

Another suggestion, in case you have the xbox connected directly to your pc (and your pc connected to a router)... Go to control panel > network and internet > network and sharing > click on "change adapter settings" in left hand pane > select both your computer and xbox connections and right click "bridge connections". This will allow SMB shares and internet connection to your xbox (make sure internet connection sharing is off for both connections, also I used dhcp settings and it's working fine). This was pretty much the same thing i did in xp if I recall correctly.

I can see everything on my external harddrive and I want to refraine from putting my music on my external. But when I try seeing my music that is on my PC, I get that SMB password protect... Now I have se7en also... and when I went to control panel and to change network name, the network ID button is greyed out... can't press it... is that the problem??? how do I fix that?

I have also had problems with seeing my shares in XBMC after upgrading to Windows 7. After much research I found that uninstalling Windows live ID sign in assistant via the control panel restores the access to the shares. Also make sure that you have the password protected sharing option disabled. Don't ask me why this fixes it but it did for me and a fair few others according to some sites. Hope it works for you.

I am vexed by this. i followed all the instructions and it worked. But then i re enabled my firewall again to see if i could allow the permissions through it and i haven't managed to get it working since. I've duplicated all the actions and everything but i can't seem to get the xbox to find the server for a second time. This is really doing my head in, i just can't figure it out. ANy help would be greatly accepted.

hmmm, just be digging around a little on the computer. When i open the Network page (when you go to start and select your profile name, down the side you have network), i see my pc. When i right click on it and select 'connect with remote desktop connection', i get the error message 'Your computer could not connect to another console session on the remote computer because you already have a console session in progress'. Now i think this is a little strange so i go to the control panel and open up the remote App and desktop connections page, only to find that there are no current session running. I suspect the reason why a few of us managed to get this thing working the once and not again, is because it creates a session but doesn't stop it. I suspect if we could soomehow close this mysterious session then it will work. However i don;t know how to do that, so again can anyone help?

I'm afraid ever since i switched from the RC to the OEM version I haven't had any trouble with it so I can't really help you any more :/
