Write access to root of mass storage devices
Hi All We are deploying Win7 into our company with the users set as standard users. I am aware of the restrictions writing to the root of the C drive (or any fixed disks) however is there any way, preferrably by the way of GPO, to allow users to be able to write to the root on external storage devices? Most users in our company has USB hard drives for backups etc, and they cannot write to the root of the drive - we would like to lift that restriction, if possible Thanks for any tips

Hi, Try to check if you have configure the removable storage device policies: Control Read or Write Access to Removable Devices or Media http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc730808(v=ws.10).aspx Alex Zhao TechNet Subscriber Support If you are TechNet Subscription user and have any feedback on our support quality, please send your feedback here.Alex Zhao TechNet Community Support

Thanks Alex - this post only seems to show you how to restrict removable media storage. "You can use this procedure to restrict the ability of your users to read or write to a device affected by the policy setting" We have not made any changes to this policy right now. Perhaps the answer is to teach users not to write to the ROOT of external drives!
