Wlan autoconfig bug, any way around it?
As I feared, as soon as I fired up Windows 7 32-bit for the first time I looked in services and my old friend, WLAN Autoconfig was there, and just as in Vista, disabling it causes your wireless network to drop. As a result I have a choice between not having internet, or having Skype/games/downloads/the net in general lag out horribly every 60 seconds. Linksys only provides a vanilla driver for the WMP54G for Vista, not the wireless manager you get with the XP driver (which I doubt would work in 7), and neither Wlan Optimizer or Vista anti-lag work to clear up the issue on this OS (which I figured they wouldn't). Does anyone have any ideas at all as to how I could get around this short of purchasing a 200ft ethernet cable and going wired? Does anyone happen to know of a 3rd party WLAN manager that isn't dependent on Wlan Autoconfig?

I have this very same problem with the same wireless card and Windows 7 64-bit. It's a rampant problem that lots of folks are complaining about on many forums with no fix that works for everyone out there unfortunately. I've tried the same things you have with no resolution. I've even tried the Ralink drivers with my card (they are better drivers by the way and have their own WLAN manager software as well). My wife has an MSI Turbo G wireless card that works without issue, so it has to be a combination of Windows 7/Vista and the Linksys card (although I've seen this complaint with other cards out there as well). Please, Microsoft...get rid of this "feature" in Windows! It makes gaming and video/audio streaming wirelessly useless for many people. The Linksys WMP54G is a very common card used by an awful lot of users out there...too many to overlook this issue. I've tried disabling the WLAN autoconfig and unchecking the box in my wireless configuration that allows for polling for better wireless connections, but I still get theinsane ping spikes every 60 seconds....1ms....1ms....1,500ms....1ms.....it's driving me crazy!

Wow....so many views over the past few days and no replies? Is nobody else here is having this problem?
April 3rd, 2009 5:08pm

Well, it is definitely a problem with Windows 7and the WMP54G wireless card's driver. I finally got my MSI Turbo-G Wireless Adapter last weekend. Did a fresh install of Windows 7 with the adapter physically installed in the system. Once Windows finished installing, I updated the driver for the card with the Vista 64-bit driver that can be found on MSI's website....rebooted....pulled up a command box....ping spike still there....Then, I had Windows Update search for new updates. It found a Ralink driver for my card, so I installed it. No ping spike any more! This is exactly what we did with my wife's PC, and her's doesn't have the ping spike either. So, either Windows doesn't like something with the Linksys driver, or their driver just doesn't work properly with Vista or Windows 7. Thankfully, the MSI card was only $25 at Amazon. It really shouldn't have been this painful to sort out though.... :/

Unfortunately having the same problem.Windows XP had the same problem, but all you had to do was disable wireless zero configuration, set static IPand use dlink 3rd pary lan manager. If they don't fix the wireless polling lag in Windows 7 ther will still be a lot of wireless users still stuck on XP

I keep losing my connection about several times a day. I went to the settings and changed the following settings.AP Compatibility Mode = Higher PerformanceIBSS 54g Mde = 54g PerformanceLocation = USMinimum Power Consumtion = DisabledSpeedBooster = Enabled (was disabled)XPress Technology = EnabledI'll post later today if this fixed my disconnectswin7/32WMP54G

None of the previous changes worked..All wireless settings ok..Removed drivers and defaulted to Broadcomm drivers..That did not fix the problem...The broadcomm default to b instead of g. And when I changed to g, no connection, no matter what I did..I did noticed my screen would blank once in a while....So..Turned off the Desktop background Slide Show...Odd..MY screen stopped flashing. AND My wireless held for over 9 hrs. Rebooted pc held for over 6 hrs...Rebooted again and got strainght connection for over 3 hrs..

Is there a way to hide the other visible wireless connections so that wlan autoconfig does not try to reconnect with a better network every 60 seconds? :|What is the name of the registry that sets the value for how often it is to this?Alok, it is windows vista and its silly wlan autconfig reconnect every 60 seconds, is there a fix for this!?Or does it have something to with packet buffering or TTL of packets? possibly DTIM? HELP PLEASE! :|

Hello Guys, As Scott D, i would like to know if there is a solution regarding to hide other visible wireless connections so that wlan autoconfig does not try to reconnect with a better network every 60 seconds ? Since i have installed Windows 7 and play online games via Wifi connection, every minutes my ping is growing up till 400 - or 900 ms. ( FYI i have switched from XP to 7 ). It's pretty bad for me because, i can't play online games anymore. Everything is fine and then, i am getting my ping likes 300ms, 800ms, 250ms, 40ms 40ms 40ms, pretty ennoying. I tested : Wlan Optimizer but it doesn't work at all. To resume, i do not understand why, when i am doing a " ping -t www.google.com " every minutes my ping is spiking to 300ms instead of 30 - 40ms ? I have a broadcom wifi card. Sincerely, Vincent.

I recently upgraded to Windows 7 Home premium from Vista. I am having the same problem with my ping intermittently rising while playing games. I am connecting to servers that originally had low pings to my connection. Now I cannot do any online gaming. This seems like it's been a problem for a long time and has not been resolved or is even being looked into. I may rollback to Vista at this rate.
November 4th, 2009 7:24am

Of course this hasn't been fixed, because Windows 7 isnt using the Wireless Zero Configuration like Windows XP.Its because Windows 7is scouting for available wireless points every 30 - 60 secs which causethe spikes. If I could find a wireless card who's software supports Windows 7 I could turn off the WLAN AutoConfig and use the 3rd party tool to configure network settings. If you disable WLAN AutoConfig you disable network conectivity.I solved this problem by using a 5 metre network cable :( only solution.

In Win7, if you don't wantWLAN AutoConfig to search for more preferred networks, which may result in lag or ping spike, you can do the following.1. Right click the WLANnetwork that is currently connected and select "Properties". Alternatively, you can open "Network and Sharing Center", click "Manage wireless networks", and double click the WLAN network that is currently connected.2. A dialog will pop up. In the "Connection" tab, uncheck "Connect to a more preferred network if available".3. Click "OK" to save the changes. If you are still expericing the same issue after the above changes, please open a command window and run "netsh wlan show all",then post the entire output in your reply. Thanks,Yi

Same problem, none of the solutions work for me. In addition I have tried this: netsh wlan set autoconfig enabled=no interface="Wireless Network Connection" Which some forums and sites have suggested, but I had no luck. Very aggravating feature, that seems so simple to fix. I figure if we could find the registry value that indicates how long it waits before it checks for a new network we could fix this. Guys, I am not sure for Windows 7 but got the same issue with WLAN card on Server 2008 Enterprise. There is no WLAN Autoconfig in services.msc.This can be fixed by installing Wireless LAN Service Feature from Server Manager. Cheers!! Asif Parvez
