Wireless network signal strong with correct IP address but still no internet!
I'm trying to set up a wireless network by use of a 2wire gateway. At first my laptop (Dell running XP) would recieve a signal but couldn't connect. I was receiving the generic 169.XXX.XXX.XXX IP address. So after some research I went under proporties and changed the IP and gateway info to match my router. This solved my "limited/ no activity" problem I was having and the correct IP address was also showing on my laptop. HOWEVER...I still can't connect to the internet. I did the "run...IP/config" thing and still no dice. Any help will be appreciated!1 person got this answerI do too

Hi Jns4be, Thanks for posting. The 2wire is normally a router set to lease IP addresses to your computer. Do you still have DHCP enabled on the router or are you just using static IP addresses on your network? If you plug into the router using a Cat 5 cable do you get on the internet or do you still have issues? If this is only a wireless issue, have you verified your security settings to make sure you have the correct encryption key? Please let us know this information so we can make sure to give you the correct answer. Also here is a link that explains how to setup your gateway with an XP machine:http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=224Hope this helps! Let us know if it resolves your issue. Hi Shawn!I have returned my IP address to DHCP enabled. My IP address is now the 169.254.xxx.xxx and I have limited activity with no internet access again. I have not tried plugging in the cable yet, but plan on that when I get home. I have triple checked the encryption key so I don't think that could be the problem. I also "pinged" the ip and gateway and could only get through to the ip. Not sure what this means but seems like I cant get through to the router?I will try to reply this evening with the ipconfig/all information. Thanks for you help!

Ok now you aren't going to believe this. Now my wireless signal will not send from my 2wire router. The light is not on on the front of the router. I restarted it twice and still no light. Hi jns4be, Thanks for all the information. With the wireless not being able to broadcast a signal you will need to contact either 2-Wire or your ISP that it is provided through. With the computer plugged in it does look like you are leasing a proper IP address as shown above. Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.116 With this can you connect to the internet? As the IP appears to be valid you are communicating with your gateway. I had a similar problem with my HP Pavilion dv1125, Windows XP Professional SP3. I tried changing the settings in the 2wire gateway but there was no need for messing up with it. The actual solution was disabling the Windows Firewall service at Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. No more "limited/no activity" problems since then. Give it a try. P.S. Highly recommendable to have a good third-party Antivirus/Firewall, just in case.
