Wireless connection problem
Hi, I have a problem with Windows 7 and my wireless adaptor, i have tried with 2 adaptors and i get the same issue, my internet connection disconnects randomly and it stays 4 o 5 seconds to reconnect. I have disabled the save energy from the adaptor, and tried to install it with Windows vista compatibility mode but it doesn't solves anything. 1st adaptor is: Belkin Wireless G PCI Adapter, the official site says to install the chipset drivers. 2nd adaptor is : ASUS USB 802.11g Wireless Adapter Driver. Sorry for my english.

I don't know what is going on with Win 7 and power save mode, but powered USB ports are not responding as they did with Vista or XP. Some adapters seem to be more susceptible (ie. Linksys, for me.)Various suggestions from a lot of places include:1. Make surea USBadapter is connected directly to a computer USB port on the back of the computer box. Uninstall the driver while the adapter is unplugged. Move it from port to port until you find one that dies the least. Remove all other USB devices that may be consuming USB power.2. Open the device (USB or PCI) in Device Manager and disable "Minimum Power Consumption." (Since I did this, my device never fails anymore, but sleep mode no longer works.)3. Try the manufacturer's driver. If that doesn't work, let it default to the Win 7 driver.So... is it the driver, or Win 7? Good question. My answer... my adapters worked fine under Vista.

To be honest I have never seen an option in Device Manager to disable "Minimum Power Consumption." Went through all available options and didn't see anything. Could you explain how to do this?

Device Manager | Network Adapters | Wireless Device in question (right click) |Properties| Advanced TabSelect "Minimum Power Consumption", on right, select Disabled. Now the bad news...This may only be available as a Linksys driver function, I don't know, but it should be available (in some form) if the device can support sleep mode.

As I have reviewed several of the possible fixes for the wireless connection problems, I believe this will have to be handeled quite quickly for drivers that will be capable of operating the wireless card devices. This problem has been consistent with these devices. The unfortunate aspect of this problem is two fold:A. If there is to be any interfacing with updates and/or other software or registration/operation of the Win7 OS the unit will require some type of internet connection. This cannot be completed for those of us who use all wireless connection devices. B. The device drivers will require a download that has disc write capability for the correct operational drivers themselves. This will also need to be performed from a remote unit capable of writing these drivers without interfacing the drivers for installation on the remote unit itself, unless the drivers are written as complete driver downloads for all compatible OS systems.I would personally like to forward progress on the testing of other hardware and software for the Win7 OS but currently do not have the capability of doing so until the wireless driver issues have been resolved. Micrsoft partners need to be aware of the deperate need to get these type driver issues resolved as soon as possible. Please let us know of the progress and/or solutions as soon as they become available.

You will have to check with the manufacturers. Many have Windows 7 drivers available, and many do not. It is up to them to support the OS. If not, Windows Vista drivers do usually work.

does anyone know which cards are known to work with 7?

There are plenty that do. I doubt there is a list. Again, it depends on the manufacturer's initiative with supporting the Operating system. MANY wireless cards that worked on Windows Vista will work just fine on Windows 7. So if your wireless card says it works with Windows Vista, it should also work on Windows 7, just no guarantee it will, because different configurations can cause incompatibility depending on your machine.

This may only be available as a Linksys driver function, I don't know, but it should be available (in some form) if the device can support sleep mode. Smacks head on keyboard. Went straight past network adapters to USB and I was like...never have I seen power options in here. Anyways, I went to the advanced tab. I do not have a Minimum Power Consumption, I have Power Output and Power Save Mode. Output is on 100% and Power Save Mode is disabled. Then went over to Power Management and unchecked "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Not sure if that will matter since I am running a desktop but we will see. Current issue is that it shows internet access although when attempting to open IE8 (Default Settings) or FF (Plugins Enabled) both of them fail. I will try signing into Windows Live Messenger to test if it is the browser or network settings but I am on my Vista laptop and am posting this as we speak. This seems to be quite the issue on 7. As for the other people on here asking about compatibility. Unless you are running some local party wireless device, your major brand wireless should be good to go. Linksys devices seem to work fine on my network except for this issue of the device cutting out. I definitely recommend checking the settings above in power consumption as well as moving the USB to the back of the desktop if possible. Made a difference for me as far as frequency.
