Wireless connection limited access only on my computer.
Hi guys, I got a problem with my wireless network. It was working fine but suddenly I can't connect to the internet. I am using Netgear USB adapter WG111v3 and the smart wizard has successfully detected my router network but unable to communicate: no sent/receive packets at all. The problem occurs the next day I updated my windows 7 (System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 [KB947821] January 2010) critical update, but I did restart my computer the same day and the internet still worked fine. Netgear has Smart wizard to help connect the internet. The wizard shows that the signal is strong, but no indication that it's connected to router or internet. I've tried to use the USB on other computers and worked fine and I've installed the latest driver for both the USB and Atheros. When I looked at the status, it shows that IPv4 and IPv6 are not connected; Media State enabled; signal full; no sent or received packets. I only can use LAN cable to connect internet and these are what I've tried: 1. Use other adapter D-link; it's still not connected. Same problem. But no problem at all on other computer with windows 7 as well. 2. Use static IP; not working 3. cmd ipconfig /all; it doesn't mention about wireless at all. 4. services.msc basically reseting WLAN autoconfig 5. Use windows setting instead of smart wizard 6. Change password encryption in router and restart it 7. Reinstall the drivers 8. Update the windows again (new update) 9. Connect to other router 10. ipconfig /dnsflush and /renew None of those has worked and I have a thought that the problem is not in my router, drivers, or the USB adapter but windows itself. Can anyone help me? I'd appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

There's no yellow there and it says that the device is working properly. It's not disabled as well. I also found out that every time I plug in the adapter, not only the usb adapter comes up, but there is also Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter. It always comes up even though I uninstall it.

You do not mess with Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter it is a feature of win 7 which allows you to connect to more than one wireless network.I would forget the wizard and use the win 7 wireless network controls.

I did. Both with and without wizard didn't work. I even tried to let windows find the driver itself and it's still not working at all. Did the wizard mess up the windows setting?

Hi, Please also try the following steps. 1. Temporarily uninstall the Smart Wizard and disable firewall for a test. 2. Assure the SSID and passphrase is the same for the router config page. 3. Disable the Wireless network adapter in Network Connection window and enable it again. 4. Restart the machine in Safe Mode with Networking to check the result. Thanks, Novak

I'm still having the same problem in safe mode :( Do you think it would be okay if I use network card instead? I thought it was my USB cos my friend said USB is not as reliable as the card one, but when I used my friend's USB, it wasn't working as well. I'm afraid that the problem would still persist even though I change to card. Thanks for your help Novak Wu and Bubbapcguy.

Hi, Please also try the following steps. 1. Move the machine to another Wireless network place and check whether it can access to Internet or not. 2. Perform a System Restore to an earlier point. 3. Assign a static IP address. ==================== Before we proceed, I would like to let you know some general router IP addresses., In most cases, the router address is “192.168.1.1”, “192.168.0.1” or “192.168.18.1”. If we know the IP address of the router, please perform the following steps. a. Click "Start", input "NCPA.CPL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter. b. Right click on the connection that you use for the local connection, and then click "Properties". c. Click “Continue” to verify the administrator permission. d. Click to select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", and then click "Properties". e. Select “use the following IP address”. Manually set “IP address” (For example, if your router IP address is 192.168.1.1, we can type the IP address as 192.168.1.22. If the router IP address is 192.168.0.1, we should type in 192.168.0.22.) Manually set “Subnet mask” as 255.255.255.0 (Note: We can use this address as the default subnet mask.) Manually set “Default gateway” (Note: Default gateway is the IP address of the router.) Manually set “preferred DNS server” (Note: Preferred DNS server is also the address of the router.) f. Click “OK”. If the issue persists, please type "ipconfig /all" and post the result here for research. Thanks, Novak

Hi Novak, I've tried to manually configured like above, it's still not working. But when I clicked the properties, there wasn't any administrator permission verification (even though there's shield symbol there). I don't know if this matters. Below are the result from ipconfig /all. As you can see, there's no mention about my wireless connection, but the hardware is said installed and working properly. Based on above information, there was no Wireless network adapter. Please open Device Manager and verify whether Wireless network adapter is installed successfully. If not, please reinstall it for a test. Meanwhile, please also collect System Information and upload it for research. Thanks, Novak
