Wireless computer not listed in HomeGroup
Follow on from my post "Failure to set up HomeGroup". Both machines are running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Have managed to set up a HomeGroup (please see post quoted above). Strange thing is that although I can see Doreen-PC1 (Desktop) in the HomeGroup when using the laptop wireless, I cannot see Doreen-PC2 (Laptop) in the HomeGroup when using the wired Desktop. Although the wireless laptop is not shown in the wired desktop, I can view/edit files on the desktop via the laptop. Both are enabled to share files and both have discovery enabled.

Hi, Can you use the IP address to access the laptop on the desktop? Please disable firewalls on the both sides. Then disable the Network Discovery and re-enable it for a test. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Thanks for your reply Not too sure about "...use the IP address to access the laptop on the desktop?" Do I assume you mean look in Hub manager, check laptop IP address in Home Network and then enter in IE8 on the desktop? As I recall it is only the last digit that is different from the desktop's IP address. I take it that if I cannot access laptop this way the connection may be blocked by the desktop firewall? Both machines are using Windows firewall, so it seems funny that it allows connection to the desktop via the laptop but not vice versa. Have see in another post that these need to be allowed in firewall for HomeGroup and will check in both machines: Core Networking; File and Printer Sharing HomeGroup; Network Discovery In my XP machine there is a tick box in Windows firewall that tells it to notify if any programs have been blocked, or does this apply to programs only, not stand-alone IP addresses. Will try your advice when I have access to my friend's computer. Thanks

Hi, Outbound and Inbound is different. So I suggest to disable the firewall for a test. This will eliminate the effect of firewall. Regarding how to use the IP address to access the share folder. Please use the following format. Type \\the IP address of the remote computer in the Run field or the explorer path field. If you receive any error message, please post back. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Just turning the firewall off and then on again did the trick. So much for Windows 7 easy HomeGroup set up. I wonder how many others are wondering what they may have done wrong. Thanks for your help
