Wireless Router - Network Adapter - Vista
Ive just bought a new Dell laptop with Vista, there is wirelesscard already installed, so i just needed the router. I got a Netgear one, when i try to install it i cant get past step 1, and there are 5 steps to load it up. I get the message "The network adapter is this computer isn't responding". Ive spoken to dell and they say everything should work and that the card is installed. Ive been into device manager and in properties it says the network adapter is working ok. Why am i getting this message? I have tried everything even plugging it in first which it says your not supposed to but i just tried everything. My internet works, i just cant get wireless at the moment. Any suggestions please? Thanks.

See if your laptop has a wireless switch to turn it on and off. Both mine and my wife's have this. Mine defaults to on while her's defaults to off. I could not figure out why her laptop was not finding any networks until I noticed this switch on the front of the laptop and flipped it on. Do you see any wireless networks at all? In most places you will see at least a couple from your neighbors (I see up to 7 at times). If you see some but not yours then make sure all the settings on your router are correct. A lot of wireless routers will actually come defaulted to the wireless turned off and you need to connect via LAN cable then get into the settings for it to turn them on and setup security (always setup security especially with Vista since it limits access on unsecured networks).

thanks for this, i did check on device manager and it says my wireless adapter is working properly but doesnt say anything about turning it on. I got 3 wireless networks showing (2 protected and 1 unprotected) and it doesnt connect to any of them. My wireless still isn't working, it wont load the disc that comes with it. It also doesnt work if i plug everything in, i tried putting the cable into the LAN port and internet port on the router from my broadband modem but that doesnt do anything, the internet works but not the wireless. I have a Netgear one, im in contact with them now to see if they have a solution.
