Wireless Network Security Key Reverts to Old Security Key on Restart or Sleep Mode
Whenever my desktop goes into sleep mode or is restarted it returns being unable to connect to the internet. This happens because my Network Security Key reverts to an old password. I've updated the driver, changed the power save settings on the driver, and reintered the network security key a number of different times but it seems that no matter how I go about it, the new key will not 'stick'.

Hi modernaught, Thanks for the post! What's the model of your router? Does it already have a specific key? How did you change the Wireless Network Security Key? Because it depends on your router. Please give us more information. Thank you for your responce, My router is a 2wire 1701HG Gateway. The WEP key is already set and I have never had reason to change it. I've changed the wifi Security Key a few different ways but generally I click on the connection in my taskbar > right click VirtualProfile > Properties > and then enter the security key in the corresponding field under the Security tab. Is there a way to enter the Security Key and ensure that it saves?

I have been searching elsewhere since I encountered this problem initially with little success. I found the exact problem here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/windows-7-will-not-remember-wireless-network-key/63d2ce51-371a-48e4-b1ae-c349e4f51fde as seen in this thread the issue is not resolved for these people either. has anyone else had success resolving this issue?

ok I have finally discovered the solution on my own. I have been banging my head against a wall with this issue for some time but I have finally figured it out. If you are having trouble with Windows 7 not saving your network security key, or reverting to some old key, the solution is as follows: run msconfig (start > run (or just type into the "Search programs and files" field above the windows orb) > msconfig) this brings up the System Configuration dialog box click the Startup tab scroll to find your wifi adapter's startup program (in my case it was NETGEAR) uncheck the box next to this startup item restart your computer. problem solved.

Thanks modernaught, Unchecking all unneccesary services resolved my issue. My issue: I had setup a network with WEP 5-chars ascii password. I wanted to make it more secure, so I changed the wireless settings. Including SSID. On my windows 7 computer downstairs everything went wel setting the new settings. Connected to the router in no time over wifi. On my android phone, the same thing. No problem. On my windows 7 notebook however it did not accept the new password! But when I typed in the old wifi password, it accepted it. But then it said I had limited network connectivity. Probably because windows thought the network key was correct while it was not. Uninstalling the network driver, removing all WIFI networks, even in registry did not solve the issue. Unchecking all unneccesary services did solve it. Strange thing I noticed: once, I saw a filled in network key in the settings dialog: "3534383630"., which I did not put their, I just inserted my new network key. The strange combination was the hexadecimal representation of my old WEP ASCII password "54860".
