Wireless Network Connection cannot be Enabled
I have a Compaq computer running Windows 7 (32 bit) which is able to connect of my home networkand the internet when I am using the ethernet port. I am connecting to the internet using a 2Wire modem/router. I have been trying to get a new Medialink MWN 150n wireless adapter to connect to the network and internet wirelessly. The adapter is recognized by windows and the Device Manager says the adapter is working. However, when I go to Control Panel, Network Connections and see the wireless adapter listed, it is shown as disabled. When I right click on the adapter, the machine responds with "enabling" and then "enabled". However, the listing still shows the adapter as disabled. Diagnostics seems to indicate there is a driver or adapter problem. This is the second adapter I have tried (Airlink 101, n speed adapter) with the same results. What steps can I take to get the wireless adapter to work on my system?

Did you ensure the same passphrase and ssid is set accordingly on the compaq as well as on the 2wire modem/router config page? I would suggest you to use a lan cable and ensure no security feature is enable and once you're able to access the router config page and apply the setting, remember to save and exit Next try accessing the wireless again, this time without the lan cable

The computer can access the network and internet using an ethernet cable after I reset the 2wire modem/router. How do you enter a passphrase and ssid on the Compac Computer? I have set a password on the modem/router. My wife's laptop is able to connect to the modem/router without any problems. The issue exists only on my desktop.

Go to the wireless under network and sharing center>wireless or add a wireless device to the network if it wasn't setup yet. Btw if you're using the third party utility that comes with the wireless adapter than don't used the build in wireless feature in windows 7, fyi you could choose either one but not both Last time xp is known as Wireless Zero Configuration and now wireless zero config the new name for win 7 is known as wlan autoconfig you can enable or disable it by going to start> control panel> administrative tools> services> WLAN Autoconfig<< right click and select stop or start. Lastly ensure that network discovery is turn on and there isn't any third party firewall like norton or ZA on your rig As how to input ssid and passphrase on the compaq comp, you could do it under Network Connections of the pc on the wireless network

Well, the mystery is solved. I contacted the wireless adapter manufacturer and he asked if I had Kaspersky Internet Security on my system. I do have it. He indicated that unchecking the "Enable Self Defense" option would likely solve the problem. He was correct. Even though Kaspersky was disabled, enabling "self Defense apparently prevents a wireless network adapter from connecting to the wireless DSL modem/router. Just a quick unplugging of the ethernet cable and shutting down the DSL router after disabling "self defense" allowed the wireless router to connect. If you have this issue come up again, you might want to ask if Kaspersky Internet Security is being used.

Ok just as i thought on my above thread "there isn't any third party firewall like norton or ZA on your rig" it doesn't need to be Kaspersky , so long there is any third party firewall, u would need to configure to let it go through or alternatively uninstall it
