Wireless N connects at 150Mbps, but can be changed to 300Mbps but reverts on next boot?
New computer, Dell XPS 8500. W7 x64 OS. First wireless card, a Dell Wireless N 1703, always connected at 150Mbps. Both Dell and I tried all possible settings and even changed some on the router. 'Decision' was that the card would not support FULL N speed and a replacement Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 was sent and installed. On boot, this card connects at 150Mbps. I discovered if I go into the Network Connection and the Intel settings, if I change the signal from mixed (2.4 and 5.2GHZ) to 2.4Ghz only and then it connects at 300Mbps. Stays like that until the next boot (either a power off or restart, doesn't matter), when it comes up at 150Mbps. Change the setting again back to what it was before (2.4 to mixed) and back to 300Mbps it goes... My router is an ASUS RT-N56U. There are 3 flashes available for it, ASUS standard and Beta, and a Russian custom flash. I've tried ALL three and there is no difference. Another computer in the house using a LinkSys WMP300N connects at 270Mbps (LinkSys card is a 14x) all the time. inSSIDer shows that the router has a max. speed of 300Mbps. The 8500 has antenna's in the case on the top under the outside case. Only 2 are there, fixed position at right angles to each other. Why would it connect like this and not at the max speed? As the computer is coming up I can see the 5 bars on the Systray, and it appears that all 5 are full and then shortly after it drops to 4. I'm also using a Network gadget to monitor this, and it usually shows 79% for the signal strength but when it is connected at 300Mbps it shows 99%? This new computer is in the SAME location as the other wireless (since moved to a new location and still getting 270Mbps) that was getting 270Mbps there? I was thinking the 2 wire/antenna could be the problem, but if so, why can I force a 300Mbps connection? I checked this site, Intel info on settings and made sure it was set like that. I set the router to N Only and it didn't help? Suggestions?Irv S
