Wireless Hosted Network in Win7
I still can't figure out what the fuss is about with this Windows 7 HostedNetwork feature when Linux has had it for years and it's been much less restrictive than Microsoft's implementation. From MSDN: "Layer 2 bridging is prohibited between the AP adapter and any other adapters in the system." This means that you can't use your AP in bridge mode which you could in Linux (in fact, that's the simplest form of setting up an AP in Linux on top of your existing infra). Bridging the AP to your wired LAN is how hardware APs behave (i.e. the AP part is bridged to the ethernet). What you're getting with Microsoft's implementation is a double-layered router/NAT to the internet. This means traffic into your intranet would need to be via ICS. I'd certainly like to know why Microsoft has decided on this restriction which to me seems entirely artificial.

Hi Mark, As we know, there are many differences between Windows and Linux, such as on the system architecture, mechanism, features design, etc. Regarding the feature Wireless Hosted Network which you concerned, for deeper or more precise information, it is recommended that you go to MSDN for help: Microsoft Developer Network Forums Home Networking Developer Platform Center - Support Thank you for your understanding.
