Wireless - Windows says connected to network, yet cannot access Internet
Hi,I've got the Windows 7 7000 beta installed on my HTPC. I had network and internet connection until this morning. Windows says that I am connected to the local network and internet, yet I cannot browse any websites in Internet Explorer. It says that each site I try is unavailable. I can't even connect to the router's homepage.I can connect to another PC's shared drive though. And Windows activation worked ok. All other PCs on the network can connect to the internet just fine.I'm running a Linksys WAG160N ADSL router, and a Linksys WUSB600N USB adaptor on my HTPC.I've tried disabling the USB adaptor, reinstalling the drivers, resetting the router, rebooting the HTPCetc, but nothing seems to work. Anyone have any bright ideas? Remember that the connection was working at the start. I haven't installed any antivirus software yet, and have Windows firewall switched off.

Satch:I, and many others have had similar problems. My system was accessing the intermet through IE8 Beta with no problems. Then, on thursday my Win 7 Beta system would not access the internet through IE8 Beta. While troubleshooting I noticed a couple of my website programs were accessable, and I suspected they may have loaded site specific browsers into my system to access their sites. so I decided it might be an IE8 Beta issue. I FOUND A FORUM THAT SAID IE8 CANNOT BE RELOADED WITH THE AVAILABLE STAND ALONE IE8 BETA PROGRAM so I thought I might be out of luck. As luck would have it I found another forum piece, in another Win 7 Beta topic on this page where a guy with the same problem tried using firefox and and his system connected with no problem after that. I did the same with the same result. Give it a try. Good luck!!!

Anytime you are sure you are connected to your network, check by typing "ipconfig /all" at a command promt, make sure you not only have a valid IP address but that you also have the valid DNS assignments. Trying pinging your DNS server IP addresses, if you can not ping them, then you will certainly not be able to do name resolution and internet browsing will be out.So I guess the question is:1) Do you have an IP address currently, if so, can you ping the default gateway and DNS ip addresses?Shon

Thanks for the help so far guys. Here is a copy of my ipconfig /all results. I tried pinging the 4 main IP's (192.168.100.1, 192.168.100.2, 203.97.78.44, and 203.97.78.43) and all pinged fine. I'm yet to try the Firefox suggestion, but will give that a go shortly. Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7000]Copyright (c) 2006 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Yep, installing Firefox gives me access to the internet again, but IE is still inoperable. I've always used IE and would like to continue doing so if anyone has any ideas on how I can get it going again.
January 18th, 2009 12:31am

I had that happen to me twice, but they both only happened because i had to force the computer to turn off. The way that i got it going again the first timewas by doing a system restore to the point where it was working. The second time i did a shut down and waited 10 minutes then started it back up again. Both methods i used worked for me.

There are 100's of topic's about this exact issue. None of them provide any solution. MS are bound to know about this, yet no updates to fix it :(
January 18th, 2009 1:21am

Satch: I fully agree. Maybe MS will send out a fix in an auto-upgrade or someone will come forward with a solution. So many people are having the same type of problems I'm sure an answer will be forth coming. I am just happy that I was able to connect all three of my computers together with a good stable file share network with relatively few problems, especially since all three operating systems are different (XP, Vista 64, and Win7 Beta). If I come across anything I will try to get back to you. Good Luck

i have changed the security options for my router from wpa-psk to wep (open system with mac filter). works fine. (german version of windows 7)
January 18th, 2009 2:27am

Satch:Try this, it has worked for a number of people:Enter IE8; on the upper toolbar click: "Tools" then "internet options/programs/manage add-ons".In "manage add-ons" disable all add-ons to see if that gets you going. My situation was exactly like yours, and it worked for me. Let me know if it helps.cbillhoeft@charter.net

Unfortunately that did not solve the issue. There is another thread on this subject so I'll try something they mentioned there. Thanks.

Thanks.Check the application compatibility section; a lot of people were connected to the network, yet were unable to view webpages using IE8. It appears that one of the common problems were the Virus protection programs, once you uninstall it, IE8 works immediately. Unfortunately, the search for another Virus protection program was pretty long (Norton 360, AVG, and two or three others caused BSOD on my system). Currently working with ESET NOD32 4 Beta, and everything is still running stable.

I too have also have this problem with internet explorer connnecting but i find the problem to be intermittent. Firefox also will intermittently stop working or lose connection. I've noticed that I can still open a cmd prompt and ping any site with no packet loss. I'm thinking that its either a security issue or a compatibility issue with windows 7 and the network adapter. sure would love some answers on this.

I posted this in an earlier post but it fixed my issue which was the same as yours.. IE8 will not connect, MS Messenger same results. Firefox works fine.. able to ping web addresses.Solution: IE 8 Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings/ uncheck Automatically detect settings save close .. go back and check it again after you connect if you wish.

Hi, I tried this a couple of weeks ago and it worked. Is there some way I can close this thread now?

MS are bound to know about this, yet no updates to fix it :( Too many variables, I bet that there are not 100 computers alike 100 other computers (except those in stores and workstations maybe)I work at an internet helpdesk, and I always check if it's wireless first. If it's an external adapter in case of WIFI, I reinstall the driver first in device manager, then check if there are no ip's designated to the connection ( > ncpa.cpl in run, then right click connection > properties > internet protocol v4 > obtain ip automatically should be ticked) , then check if there are no dial in connections or VPNs in internet options, if there are and they come back after removal, tick never choose a connection, look at lan settings, only detect settings automatically should be ticked, remove cookies and temp files. If there is a connection, one can do a ipconfig /renew, (if that doesn't work a winsock reset, after disabling AV and firewall.) It usually works then, if it doesn't but there's still a connection with the router, it may sometimes help to designate ip address and default gateway in your router's range to the connecction. however if you're on a voip router it may be useful to pick open dns to avoid firmware problems.I hope it's useful.

with Dual Band being out longer than Windows 7 i thought that Microsoft would have a fix for these problems. 1 when dual bands are setup i have 2 bands 1 i 2.4gig and 1 in 5.1 gig i have computers using both and including windows 98/2000/xp/vista32and 64 plus windows 7 the one that gives me the most problems is vista. the problem with windows 7 has is that if there is another network conflicting out there it will not tell you so you have to use the adapter software to find the problem. NOT WINDOWS 7 Du HU.Raptor001
