Wired and wireless homenetwork
OK everyone I've been completely stumped and can't figure out where to go next. I have just installed a new Belkin Play Max router in the house and connected both wired and wirelessly to the router. I have one desktop computer and a printer hard wired to the router, and 3 other computers (one desktop and 2 laptops) connected wirelessly. All computers are running Win 7 and all are connected to the internet. I previously had them all connected via one Homegroup to pass files and such around the network. It now appears that I have two totally different networks, one wired and one wireless, and I can't figure out how to combine them into one network. I created a homegroup on one of the wireless computers and was able to join that homegroup from all the other wireless computers, but when I go to the wired computer it does not recognize the wireless homegroup and just wants to create a new homegroup. When I go to Network on the wired computer it shows the other computers attached to the network but when I click on one to access it I get a pop up screen asking for Network Password (with a user name and password). I have tried every combination I can think of as a user name and password to include the SSID and password from the router to no avail. All computers have file and printer sharing on, and I am at a loss as to what is preventing them from being one large network instead of two totally different networks. Any suggestions, I'm lost.

Thanks Ben but no luck with that article, I have already created a wireless homegroup with no problem, I just can't figure out how to get my wired computer to join the existing homegroup. I am convinced I have two totally seperate networks (one wireless and one wired) and can't figure out how to get them to be just one big network. I have finally figured out how to access all the computers on the network by playing around with the file sharing so I now can go to a computer under "Network" and access files on the othe computers, but I am still at a loss on how I can combine them to make only one Homegroup. I have created a Homegroup with the computers I have connected wirelessly, but when I go to the computer that is hard wired to the router it continues to try and create a new homegroup as if there wasn't one already on the network. It doesn't give me an option to join the existing homegroup.

Hi, This issue can occur by incorrect network settings or incompatible third party programs. Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Please type “Ipconfig” in Command Console on both wired machine and Wireless machine to assure they are in the same subnet. 2. Modify relevant settings on Windows 7 machine. a. Click Start and open Control Panel. b. Open "Network and Sharing Center" and click "Advanced sharing settings". c. Expand the current network profile (such as "Home or Work"), and then select the following options: "Turn on Network Discovery", "Turn on file and printer sharing", "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders", "Turn off password protected sharing" 3. Temporarily turn off firewall and uninstall antivirus program on each machine, and then try to join the HomeGroup again. 4. Leave HomeGroup on each Wireless machine and recreate a new HomeGroup for a test. Thanks, Novak

1. Checked Ipconfig on both wired and wireless machines and they show up on the same subnet. 2. Checked under network and sharing center and yes everything is set as you show above. 3. Tried turning off firewall and MSE antivirus to no avail. 4. When I leave the HomeGroup on the Wireless machine it just wants to create a new HomeGroup and doesn't recognize the existing HomeGroup on the Wired computer. I still think that there are somehow two distinct networks. When I go to control panel and open "Network and Internet" and then go to "Network and Sharing Center" on the Wired computer under where it says "View your basic network information and set up connections" it shows "Network 2" under the home for home network, But when I go to the same place on my wireless computers it actually shows my SSID in that section. When I go to the "see full map" in Network and Sharing Center it shows all computers and printers connected to the same router (wired computer and printer are shown with a double solid line and wireless computers are shown with a double dashed line) and under the router it shows the SSID for the router. No where can I find why the wired computer shows "Network 2" when all the wireless computers show the SSID?

Hi, Please also try the following steps. 1. Download the latest NIC driver on the wired network machine. Then, please uninstall the current one and reinstall the latest one. 2. Manually assign a static IP address and DNS address on each machine for a test. If the issue persists, please run “ipconfig /all” on both the wired network machine and Wireless network machine, and then post the result here for research. Thanks, Novak

I have the exact same problem. Everything is fine, but apparently the wireless network is separated from wired network! any way to connect these two?
May 6th, 2010 4:32pm

I have the same issue and have tried all of the above mentioned diagnostics. I seem to have two networks, those wireless ones using a different network name (SSID name) than the wired ones (not referring to workgroup name which is the same for all machines).

All, I am having the same problem as described above, has anyone here been able to figure out how to resolve this? To recap... 1 - Netgear wireless router 2 - hard wired desktop 3 - wireless laptops The laptops all have my SSID as the network name, and are all in the same Homegroup. No problems. The desktop network name is "network 2". No matter what I do I can't join the home group from the hard wired desktop. I have verified all of the settings listed above. Thank you Mac

I also have this problem. Here are some additional details: HP Z210 Workstation - Win 7 Home Premium - Direct Gigabit Connection to Ethernet Switch HP Pavillion p6804 Desktop - Win 7 Home Premium - Direct Gigabit Connection to Ethernet Switch HP Pavillion dv7 Laptop - Win 7 Home Premium - Wireless Connection All above devices show the same "Workgroup" name (WEISBROD-LAN) Thecus 4TB Raid Enabled network Storage Device - Direct Gigabit Connection to Ethernet Switch Epson Artisan 800 Printer - Wireless Connection to Network The 2 devices above show workgroup "WORKGROUP" and they have no way to set workgroup I have slightly different settings in the "Advanced Settings" dialog as I have no home groups and prefer to share using usernames and passwords so in HomeGroup connections, I have selected "Use user accounts and passwords.." I have tried all this with home group and it works the same way (doesn't seem to work) so I put it back to this. On the Z210, in the Network Explorer, I can see every one of the devices listed above. If I click on them I can access every device except the laptop. When I click on the laptop it errors telling me "Windows Cannot Access \\Joel-W7-Laptop". If I plug my laptop directly into Ethernet, I can click on it from the Z210 and see it just fine. On the laptop (when only connected wireless), I only see the laptop and the wireless printer. If I plug the laptop into a wired Ethernet connection, I can see and access everything perfectly! I have tried uninstalling Norton AV on both machines - changed nothing. Seems like windows is treating these as two separate networks simply because of the access method! I have the same problem with the Belkin Max Play Router and Homegroup. Funny enough, I have the exact same config as you. I have confirmed that of the computers are on the SAME network as reported by "ipconfig/all". The problem is with the router and nothing else. I removed the Belkin Play Max router and replaced it with a linksys router and Homegroup connects fine. I will continue to troubleshoot the issue and see if there is a solution with the Belkin and find out exactly what setting is tripping it up. I will post back with results.

Hard to believe it is actually the Belkin router. I eagerly await your response when you hear from Belkin!Joel Weisbrod
