Windows xp firewall appears to block signal from wi-fi connection from LinxS router
My computer recieving the signal from my route is shutting down indiscriminately. I have turned the firewall off thinking it was preventing the signal...it automatically gets turned back on. I turn it on with exceptions and it still turns off. What am I doing wrong?

Is Microsoft Security Essentials installed on the computer?~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

I don't think the Windows Firewall has anything to do with your problem and you shouldn't be connected with it disabled to begin with. Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3? Is Automatic Updates enabled and is the computer fully-patched at Windows Update? Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one? Did the problem coincide with the installation of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE)?What anti-virus application or security suite was installed before you installed MSE, was your subscription still current, and did you uninstall it before you installed MSE? Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

It is WinXP SP2. Automatic updates is enabled. I don't know about "fully patched." I didn't install Microsoft Security Essentials. It was on the computer as part of the Windows program? I installed AVG virus program. This is only an ongoing problem with this computer. Other computers never had a problem. I bought this computer used from a computer repair shop. It is an HP Compaq Evo which I believe was used as part of a business network originally. I returned it to the shop they tested it and found no problems there. They had given me a loaner...exact same machine...which I have hooked up directly to my cable modem and LinxS router...no problem. I can switch the locations of the computers and the one directly attached to the cablemodem/LinxS router never have a problem. Only the computer recieving the wi-fi signal consistently shuts down...even if not connected to the internet. It consistently continues to reboot and restart.

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties: Does the resulting General tab say Windows XP Professional (or Home Edition) Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3?2. Microsoft Security Essentials is an anti-virus (and anti-spyware) application. You should NOT have two (2) anti-virus applications installed & loading at boot. Uninstall AVG (Free v9.0?) via Add/Remove Programs and reboot. If the behavior persists after doing #2 and #1 lists Service Pack 2, take the computer back to the shop and demand that they either get the computer fully-patched at Windows Update and correct the wireless connection problem or give you a full refund. If they give you any flack and you paid for the computer with a credit card, call the credit card company and contest the charge. Also file a claim with your local Better Business Bureau and, if necessary, sue the store in small claims court.~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

It is Windows XP Professional and Service Pack 2. I uninstalled AVG and it still shuts down. The Microsoft Security Essentials now says it does not detect a virus protection program. Also, why does this computer work perfectly when hooked up directly to the cable modem/LinkS router and not work when used as the wi-fi computer?
