Windows will not restore from backup! Can not validate .zip file error. 100 GB of data at stake. I was testing Windows 8 Preview, and I ran into a bunch of problems using Windows 8, so after much troubleshooting I decided to run a backup and then did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. The backup on Windows 8 completed successfully, I have a 91.5 GB backup file on an external drive. The clean Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed successfully, my computer is running great. Now I try to restore all of my files from the backup and it fails. I get this error when I try to restore all files: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The restore did not complete successfully Restore encountered a problem while validating the zip file: \\?\Volume{127767ee-d6b7-11e1-a888-0026b9cf5b2e}\SPY-PC\Backup Set 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 1.zip The following information might help you resolve the problem: The backup file could not be found. Make sure the drive that the backup is saved on is attached or try to restore from a different backup. (0x8100001A) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I get the same error if I restore by folder, if I select something outside of the Users folder. If I select a folder to restore inside the Users folder, I get the same error except it applies to Backup Files 29.zip I've looked into the backup files 1 and 29, and even if I avoid folders/files contained in those .zip files (1&29) I still get the same error, for 1 or 29, weather or not I try to restore folders included in those two. So far I have been able to restore individual files, but at nearly 100 GB of stuff, I simply can not go through selecting files one by one to restore. I have tried unzipping all of the contents of the backup into a new folder, and this splits up all of my video files and movies. I tried running them through a video joiner and the video joiners will not accept videos that have been split like this. I ran chkdsk on my backup drive, it didn't fix the error. Is there any way to tweak the backup to just ignore this error and push past it? Is there a program out there that will put all my files back together and restore them? I've got a 91.5 GB backup file, my stuff is there.. Please help me get this stuff restored.

Update: Hey just throwing this out there for consideration.. Why does the error refer to: \\?\Volume{127767ee-d6b7-11e1-a888-0026b9cf5b2e}\SPY-PC\Backup Set 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 1.zip Instead of (the directory I get when I right click and open the backup file): E:\SPY-PC\Backup Set 2012-07-24 130658\Backup Files 2012-07-24 145546\Backup Files 1.zip Note, the backup is looking in \\?\Volume{blahblahblah instead of in E:\ Note, the folder name that Backup Files 1.zip, Restore looks in 130658, whereas when I right click and open the backup and browse, the files are in 145546. I may be wrong but this sounds like an issue to me? How do I get the Restore to look in the right place? I think this explains why it's acting like my Backup zips arent there.

Hi Spvros, The issue might be a invalid backup before or the catalog was corrupted. Please first try to recovery the Mediaid.bin file from the following link: Error message when you use the Restore Files option to restore a backup file on a Windows Vista-based computer: "The restore did not finish successfully. Error : 0x8100001A" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940263 If this doesn't fix the issue, please try the following method to manually Restore Files. How to Manually Restore Files Backed Up Using Windows Backup http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970914 \\?\Volume{127767ee-d6b7-11e1-a888-0026b9cf5b2e} is a volume GUID-based path. Type mountvol command to check if this is GUID of E: Thanks.
