Windows update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer
I have read the forums for this question before. when trying to update windows so that i may download a newer version of zune to use with my window's phone I recieve this "window update cannot currently check for updates becuase the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." while i am checking for updates in the systems and securites section of my control panal. I have a Refurbished Gateway Touchscreen computer. It came with windows 7. Restarting has done nothing to help. Please help me fix this problem.

Try downloading newest version of windows update agent. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104 Make sure "Windows Update" is not disabled, set it Automatic startup type and start the service if required

Hi, According to your all suggestion,I have verified all the setting are perfect than also its shows same error. Give the proper solution. Same problem here. Service is not only set to Automatic, but I've rebooted and it is listed as Started, yet Windows Update still complains that the service is not running. :[

Besides Windows Updates you also need "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" to be started. You can either set it to Automatic or start it manually and then try to download the updates. If it still doesn't work then try microsoft fixit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

I have the same problem, and I have tried everything suggested on the MS website. I have tried the automatic fixit repair tool, i have tried starting the update process manually, i have tried installing the current windows update agent, and i have tried enabling background intelligent transfer service. None of these have worked. Please provide a working solution.
