windows update does not work in windows 7 ; the error no is what Iget !
February 7th, 2009 7:20pm

That error means: ERROR_INVALID_SID winerror.h# The security ID structure is invalid. It implies there is some corrupt security descriptor on a file or folder. Can you examine your "%systemroot%\windowsupdate.log" file for this error and any details about the failure? It would be best if you could share the file with us somewhere. I got your log, thanks. Here's what I see repeated throughout your log since you installed the OS:2009-02-0720:27:45:7044864ffcMisc = Process: C:\Windows\system32\wuauclt.exe2009-02-0720:27:45:6734864ffcAUClntFATAL: Error: 0x80070539. wuauclt handler: failed to spawn COM server2009-02-0720:27:45:704 924ec4HandlerFATAL: 0x80070539: ERROR: Remote update handler container process created (PID: 4864), but exited before signaling event2009-02-0720:27:45:704 924ec4Agent * WARNING: Exit code = 0x80070539We've seen this over the years due to a permissions problem in Distributed COM+ (although never with your exact error code, which indicates corruption). Here are some steps I'd like you to try:1. Run DCOMCNFG- Navigate to Console Root \ Component Services \ Computers \ My Computer- Right click on My Computer and select Properties- Select Default COM Security tab2. Under Access Permissions click Edit DefaultMake sure that SYSTEM has Allow - Access Permission Make sure SELF and Administrators have Allow for local and remote.3. Under Launch Permissions click Edit DefaultMake sure that Administrators has Allow - Launch PermissionMake sure that INTERACTIVE has Allow - Launch PermissionMake sure that SYSTEM has Allow - Launch Permission4.Navigate to Console Root \ Component Services \ Computers \ My Computer \ DCOM Config \ - Verify that the 4 Windows Update compents exist and can be opened without errors.Let me know what you find. It's possible that we might need to explore rebuilding the COM catalog too. Was this an upgrade or a clean install?Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

Hi Ned,I did just as you suggested found the four WINDOWS update components. Everything was fine. Had nothing to change. By the way, it was a clean install .Paparaz

One more thing, everything was going A-1 in the beginning. Then I tried to upgrade the Nvidia driver update for Windows 7 without any luck. After that, I downloaded office 2007 standard because I needed it and everything went dead with the Windows update applet.Paparaz

This is going to be difficult to fix without access to the machine and a debugger. I'll look and see if anyone has reported this issue in our bug DB when I get in the office tomorrow. If not, you should probably submit the feedback and try a repair from media.Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

Thanks a lot, anyway. I'll try to redo a clean reinstall after I format the HD. In the near future though, because I'm not in for two weeks or so !Paparaz

Yes, but we're still not sure what it is. Glad this got you out of the woods for now. I'll try a repro myself tomorrow and see if it happens to me too - if it does it will make debugging here easier. Do you have any details on: which version of google desktop I need to install any setup options you chose if this was 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Thanks. I'm not able to reproduce this issue unfortunately. Are you able to reproduce the problem at will in a virtual machine? Was thinking maybe I could take a copy off your hands if it repros there...Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team
