Windows unable to get driver for network printer
Problem #1 Windows Update refuses to pull updates. You can go to the Microsoft catalog and maunally get the files for the device you wish to add and then manually insert then into the driver store. However not all files there seem to work, there are a few printers (ex: HP 4050 and 4250) that will not work. You could add the printers by IP address, however we have a dynamic DHCP pool, which means that the IP's are subject to change. Problem #2 Because HP and Windows cooperate to ensure that a driver is inaccessible, we have been unable to update the drivers on our server. That means that this method of adding a printer (and any other method) does not work. Even those drives we have downloaded from the Microsoft catalog have not worked on the server. What I want to know, - Have people been getting an update on the Win 7 x64 machines for the Windows Update service? We have seen this update come through to a number of x86 machines and that is supposed to fix the problem. However we are migrating to an all x64 machine system which means that we really need this update to come through. - Are others running into this(these) issue(s)?gone fishing;you can find me on the internet

Hi, In addition, you may rename the Windows Update temporary folders: 1) Click "Start", in "Start Search" item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter. 2) Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window: net stop wuauserv net stop CryptSvc ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sold.old net start CryptSvc net start wuauserv pause 3) After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose "Save" when you are prompted to save the file. Type "rename.bat" as the file name and save it to the Desktop. 4) Return to the Desktop, right click the rename.bat file and choose "Run as administrator". 5) You will see a DOS-like window processing. Then go back to the Add Printer function. Be patient, this will take several minutes. You will find that the SoftwareDistribution folder has been rebuilt.Tracy Cai TechNet Community Support

Thanks for the reply. And the batch file for the work around. We were doing this earlier this summer, but it is not an effective work around for installing network printers. I posted because I am wondering if most other people with x64 machines are still getting this issue. It is one we have been seeing in every computer. It was never a problem before this summer. gone fishing;you can find me on the internet

Hi, If the issue is resolved by rebuilt the SoftwareDistribution folder. The cause is the Windows Update database is corrupted. I suggest you exclude %windir%\softwareDistribution from scanning of AV software.
