Windows stops recognizing the Ethernet adapter
Windows7 64bit OS has been working fine until about 2 weeks ago. It was connected fine when I went to bed, the next morning, the systray icon for internet connection had a red slash through it. Clicking the icon and using the 'troubleshooting wizard" returns the diagnosis that the ethernet card driver is not found (or something like that). Device manager says the ethernet card is "working properly". Can't re-install driver because I'm offline. Since I'm using the mother board connection, I go to the store and get and ethernet pci card....install it and the driver from disc....Now device manager says two cards are "working properly" but neither will connect to the internet. (I've checked my cablemodem and network router...both are fine). The only change that I can see that occurred during the night it went bad was a "Windows critical update" that included about 8 patches. So I restored to a recovery point before those were applied and the network card is recognized and works ok. So I go patch by patch...install one, restart computer..connect to internet....I go through all the patches and none of them cause the problem. But, this morning I come back and the problem has recurred.....I've lost the ability to retore to a previous point...longer story- just accept it :). Any ideas????? George from a different computer

Hello George Lets try this, Uninstall the NIC drivers for both the NICReboot the machineWhen the machine is Up, Scan for hardwareIt will ask for NIC drivers, point it o the DISK that you haveInstall one of themGo to cmd prompt, check what is the IP you get (ipconfig)See if you can ping the Default gateway If that doesnt work, paste the output ipconfig/all from the machine. Do you have any Anti-Virus software installed, if yes can you please give some details of that.

I'll try that when I get home. For now, my antivirus is AVG- full version not freeware.
