Windows search isn't working for Outlook 2010
I had the Outlook 2010 beta, 64-bit, Professional. I uninstalled it and purchased Office Home and Business 2010, and installed the 32-bit version as the disc recommended. Now, two things happen: Windows Search (and I rebuilt the index) shows all emails and files when I do a search, but double-clicking the emails doesn't open it in Outlook. And, in Outlook, the "Windows Search Email Indexer" mssphtb.dll is Disabled. When I enable it and restart, it still restarts as Disabled. I tried Control Panel's Indexer Troubleshooter, and it says that it's unable to fix: "Incorrect Permissions on Windows Search Directories." Please help. Thanks.

Hi, I suggest reseting the Index service first: 1. Click the Start Button, type APPWIZ.CPL in the start search box and press Enter. 3. Click "Turn Windows features on or off on the left" pane. 4. In the Windows Features dialog box, uncheck Indexing Service restart the computer and recheck it. Thanks so much! I tried what you said, and it didn't help, and I checked the thread, but I have no folder C:\ProgramData\Windows7Index\Search on my computer. I did notice, for what it's worth, that I still have a folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14 left over on my hard drive, and there are still some files in it, even though I uninstalled the 64-bit version and now have the purchased 32-bit version, which has been installed into my C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14. Could this have anything to do with the problem, or is there other stuff I should try? Best, Brian

Hi Brian, How about creating a new account to test it: Create a new user account ==================== 1. Click the Start Button, type User Accounts in the start search pane and press Enter. 2. Click Manage user accounts. 3. Click Create a new account, and type the name. 4. Choose account type as Computer administrator. 5. Click Create Account. 6. Log off and log on with the new account. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I did, and it didn't fix it (alas). Two other odd things to note (besides the fact that - This only happens with Outlook - when I hit start and type in a word in a Onenote file and click on it, Onenote opens - just not Outlook. - When I enable "Windows Search Email Indexer" in Outlook, and restart outlook, it restarts that plugin as disabled. What else can I try? Or should I uninstall the 32-bit and put in 64-bit like I'd had before with the beta and see if that does it?

Hi, According to my search, other Office 2010 users also encountered similar issue. If it is convenient, try removing and reinstaling the Office program. OK, I discovered that it's a bug. I uninstalled and reinstalled it as 32bit, and it still occurs. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled the 64 bit version, and the problem goes away. So, if you ever installed the 64-bit beta, when you purchase Office 2010 and uninstall the beta, you MUST install 64-bit on the purchased version, even though the disc advises you against it. So I'm stuck with 64-bit and its limitations. Bummer.

Had this same problem show up after uninstalling Office 64-bit Beta and installing Office 64-bit RTM on Windows 7 64-bit. Very frustrating. The indexing would work perfectly and could open documents but not Outlook emails. Nothing would happen, even though the emails WOULD show up in the Preview panel, I could not open them. What I did that finally worked was, go to Control Panel/Programs and Features/Right click on Microsoft Office 2010/Click Change/Click Repair and let it repair the installation. Works just fine now.

You know it's amazing to me how clueless Microsoft is. I've had office 2010 for 3 days and I discovered this problem. How in the world do they release these products and not know about these things. I've also spent nearly two whole days on the phone with an MS tech from the Philippines. The guy is plenty nice but TOTALLY CLUELESS! Kind of like the MS techs you see giving all the lame answers here. Here's the deal... search indexing doesn't work with Outlook 2010! That's it! MICROSOFT needs to fix it. There is nothing we can do on our end. This guy in the Philippines should have told me "sir, it doesn't work right now - we're looking for a fix and we'll let everyone know as soon as we have it. We expect to have a fix by _____ 2010." Total time on call... 2 minutes. That would have saved me 16 hours so far!

Sorry dLerious, but I have to contradict MS guy... Same problem here, but just on one machine! Windows 7 search finds contacts and mails, but when I click one object nothing happens. After "the click", If outlook 2010 isn't already open an outlook tray icon (with a gear overlay) appears and almost immediately disappears ; when I click the search result with outlook opened, nothing seems to happen. This behaviour makes me belive that MSearch tries to call Outlook, but for some reason the program opens and closes immediately, maybe the MSSearch call is not corret and Outlook is unable to process it. I've already attempted to reset search index, reinstall MSSearch and Repair and finally reinstall office. No results.

http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlookcontact/thread/92f26632-5ad5-4a00-a499-4f57b978c5ad The answer to the Outlook indexer disabled part is here. You have to actually disable indexing of Outlook by windows search to have Outlook's own search function work correctly (it will create its own index of your emails). No, it doesn't make sense to me either but it works.
