Windows remote desktop
I have a Vista desktop and XP Home on a network. The computers are networked and I am sharing files. I have AVG on both comupters. I have on both machines enabled the remote desktop. Under the firewall on both machines I checked the exceptions tab to enable remote desktop. The computers are under the same work group and I have verified the user names. When I go to connect I get an error the client could not connect to the remote computer. I can under start run get into both machines but using the remote desktop settings I get the above error message. I get the same error message when I try from either computer. Any suggestions? I have a dlink router and the xp machine is wireless.

My questions to you:What version of Vista? And, how did you enable Remote Desktop on an XP Home box? The Home versions (both XP and Vista), while they do include the Remote Desktop client software (mstsc, which allows you to remote into another machine), do nothave the remote desktop server component (that is, you can't Remote Desktop into it.)

Hi, I would like to explain that all of the Windows Vista and Windows XP Home systems cannot be Remote Desktop host. Therefore, you cannot connect Windows XP Home computer from the Windows Vista computer via Remote Desktop. Otherwise, if your Windows Vista system is Home Premium or Home Basic, Remote Desktop cannot be established between the computers either. However, if your Windows Vista computer is Windows Vista Business or Windows Vista Ultimate, please enable Remote Desktop. 1. Click Start, in the Start Search box type "sysdm.cpl" and press Enter. 2. Click Remote tab. 3. Choose Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop. 4. Choose Select Users. . 5. Add your user account of the Windows Vista system into the list. Then you can remotely connect the Windows Vista computer from the Windows XP computer with the Windows Vista system's user account. Hope it helps.

OK here is my dilema. I purchased a laptop with Vista Home Preimum. It is a Toshiba Satellite A215 so that I could remote in from home to my work place. They told me at the best buy this would work. I can remote in from my old dell with XP Home to my laptop at work running XP Pro, but I can not do the same on my new Toshiba. I am fighting the downgrade to XP Pro, (and so are several of my co-workers) but we can not get this to work. We can even remote in with Macs with no problem. My remote screen only has one option to allow remote connections, How do I connect when the host is an XP pro machine. I have a VPN and successfully connect no problem, I have my Windows Firewall configured as recommended to allow remote desktop??? I see this question out on the next a lot, but what I do not see is a resolution????
