Windows not assigning drive letter to flash drives

Hi there,

Firstly let me say this is driving me nuts. I have tried two separate USB3 16GB thumb drives on my Asus Windows 8.1 laptop and to  no avail.

I can see them in device manager under installed storage devices and in disk manager I can see them but with no drive letter assigned. If I try and assign a drive letter I get the following error

The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date

If I use command prompt diskpart then list disk I can see the thumb drives but when I try and clean them or assign a letter it says there is no disk selected

I have two other USB3 drives that work fine as well as an external and some network drives

I have also tried both drives on another windows 8 machine and they are fine. Seems like there is an issue with my laptop with recognising new USB3 drives but I do not know where to start.

I have tried assigning the drive letter with Easus Partition Wizard but always fails unable to mount drive.

I did have brief success with the Toshiba drive by running cmd and automount disk enabled and then it was assigned a drive letter and I could get into it but after ejecting and reinserting the same issue

Any thoughts or assitance would be apprecitated

Hi,

Found lots of similar issues on line. It is possibly a low level driver issue, Try going into device manager and uninstalling these USB drivers. Then restart your computer and plug the hard drive back in it reinstalled/update the driver. If this issue still persists, try back up all files on USB storage and format it then check the issue.
